PhilsComputerLab: So I played this game now for a while, and I actually rather like it.
What I read about it being too bright, I honestly expected it to be much worse. It looked just fine to my eyes, maybe they changed the brightness again in this release?
There was some micro stuttering, but turning off the GOG overlay fixed that.
I had some tearing, but enabling v-sync in the driver, and not the game, fixed that.
There is a FOV slider as well and I like the easier difficulty.
I still believe the Vanilla version should be included, maybe GOG will come through, but all in all I'm quite happy with the release :D
Has the game crashed at all with Galaxy installed for you? The game has crashed on me a couple of times just by having it installed on my machine (mentioned
here) and the only way I was able to get the game to stop that was either removing GOG Galaxy entirely or use the RBDoom3BFG source port which means no playtime or achievement tracking on my GOG account. I remember seeing microstutters in the original Doom 3 on my machine and MSAA was very taxing for such an old game for some reason for me, especially when lots of smoke and lighting/shadows were being cast, but with BFG Edition I didn't have any microstutter as far as I can tell, even with in-game standard V-sync enabled, and MSAA not being as demanding in BFG Edition over the original.
I noticed the game was much brighter visually compared to the original in terms of atmosphere, but with a console command "set r_lightscale 1", I was able to get the game closer to the original Doom 3 in the atmosphere and darkness, though I noticed one cvar called "in_toggleRun" didn't work whether I enabled it or not and I believe it's supposed to let you toggle if you want to run by pushing the button once instead of holding the Sprint button down. I hope the GOG stuff is listening to the issues some of people like have are reporting with this release, especially the broken Galaxy support in my case, and possibly giving us the original Doom 3 as a bonus, I don't why they are not doing this anymore lately. Games like Rune Classic on GOG got to have its original version as a bonus download for those that want the original over the updated re-release and same for System Shock and other older games.
