As per title, I cannot find the option to move the mouse directionally anywhere, do I not see it or is there really no such option?

Correct, there is no such option. The only source ports that will give vertical mouselook are the unofficial ones (GZDoom/Crispy/etc).

Tnx for the reply... xD

But in an enhanced release in 2024 id and bethesda could also include a free look option..

What good does freelook do in a game that wasn't made with looking up and down in mind?
It will just break intended player's experience. Freelook only is actual for levels which were specifically designed for modern source-ports. But not for the classics.

To play better?
nigh dive developer posted a couple times about this matter here: https://www.resetera.com/threads/doom-1-2-released-adds-crossplatfrom-mp-mod-support-tons-of-campaigns-more-9-99-free-for-owners-of-doom-1-or-2.948240/page-13#post-126974907

Except it doesn't actually make it better.
Well. If make it really 3-dimensional. There is a point. Its not free look cause remain old "corridor"-shooter mechanic (level-design). And why not make it more 3-dimensional is rational question as well.

Gamepads no need for free-look. So no need for 3-dimensional remaking the original concepts. And ofc consoles/pc-gamepads ared default.

Just. Well. Always has been. Mouse inout is "last" one considered gaming input device. KB is "pre-last". Remember Quake 2? Emm. It was very first 3-dimensional FPS isn't? But remain default schema for joysticks/gamepads/KB-only input while mouse by default double KB buttons.
When HL1 released that changed... And not. 1998. Mouse become as gaming device, not mean no more wheels/joysticks/joy-panels(music/train/fly-sims)gamepads are no more PC devices (many was PC+PS1 compatible, as for which i knew for sure).
BTW there was even VR headsets back then, isn't?

It is 2024. Saying this year are for free look is like say its mouse as default input device. That maaaybe are true if release are PC-only. At least such argument. If it is PC only - not-100% that devs target KB+mouse as default or they should do. But if it is multi-platform - you all know which input devices are 100% default-"target" ones for devs and should be.

Except for Wolf 3D there is no other shooter that only aims left and right.

I hate autoaim too.

I vehemently disagree.

The only reason for it is to allow for autoaim which is crap.

Doom is 3D. So tired of people calling it 2.5. Only the sprites are 2D as you can move around the level geonmetry unlike Wolf 3D. Quake expanded upon this through 3D enemies because the engine COULD ALLOW for it.

Sweet! However, I'm not as much of a fan of GZDoom. I want to use the arrow keys to look around, alt to strafe, ctrl to shoot. Has anyone found a way to run legacy of rust in the original doom, chocolate doom, or crispy doom? I can get the title screen to load in crispy doom, but upon picking difficulty, it crashes. I'm not very familiar with Crispy Doom though.

The port needs mbf21 support
https://doomwiki.org/wiki/MBF21#Supported_ports
I have no idea what the community thinks about it, but I just downloaded DoomRetro and it works great!
Started Legacy of Rust easily.

For anyone wondering how to do it, you can point to the "id1.wad" file with the command line. Alternatively, drag and drop id1.wad onto doomretro.exe.

My cmd: doomretro.exe -iwad doom2.wad -file id1.wad

That's just not true, pretty much every 2.5d shooter from the 90s only aimed on the horizontal axis. Build Engine games like Duke 3D did let you look up and down, but it wasn't implemented the same way mouselook would, and greatly skewed what was on the screen since it wasn't a true 3D engine. Also, the vertical look had nothing to do with aiming. You could fire straight ahead and hit flying enemies.
