Acoording to this thread on the larian forums, there's no way to do it via config file. The config file is fairly short and there's nothing there to keep the game from booting in fullscreen. This is for Windows, apparently there's a way to do it with Linux...
I don't know if it can be done with something ike D3DWindower or DXWnd as i have never used any of those apps myself. I know they do work for many games though...

You are indeed going to have to use some third party program to achieve this. The release build of the game itself will not allow it.

Hello, I tried both D3DWindower or DXWnd, but they still make the game start in fullscreen mode.. Is there anyone who was actually able to play DD windowed who could give me a hint?

You could always get virtualbox (virtualbox.org) install windows and install DD on the virtual PC. Then you'd have it running full screen in a window. I can't swear that it will run fast.

yes there is a way to play it in windows mode go to C:\Users\your computers name\AppData\Local\Divinity 2\Profile and change the graphicoptions.xml file. make full screen number 0 then the screen with and hith to your screen siz with your bar at the botom mine was ScreenWidth="1270" ScreenHeight="950" yours may be diffent depending on if you have a bigger screen then me. But there you go have fun

Same for me-- I select the .DLL that comes with D3D, but the game still starts in full screen mode. I toggle the "full screen" option in D3D, try with all sorts of settings, no luck.

I heard you were/are a Larian dev (thanks for helping with awesome games) could you explain the thinking in game dev world behind some games not offering a window mode? Sure, I get it with old games that were made for DOS or Win95/98, wasn't always a viable option. But a fair number of newer games seem to restrict this as well. I'm just curious about the dev process that leads to such a choice, if it is deliberate for a particular reason or just because most people/gamers probably aren't that concerned about it.

Same thing here. Using D3DWindower doesn't affect DD in any way and so the game starts fullscreen, as usual.

In D3DWindower I was able to hit the + button to add div.exe, then with the 'div' entry selected, hit the Settings button, set the resolution, then for the DLL box browse to the folder I extracted D3DWindower and select the D3dHook.dll file. Hitting the 'Run Program' button started DD in a window, which worked fine in Win98, but under XP the graphics were messed up. I played around with the options, and found that if I unselected 'DirectX1-7 (DDraw)' in the 'Window Mode' tab of the settings, the graphics would be fine, but DD would start in full screen mode. Leaving that option selected, I used the disk version of DD's configuration tool to switch to Software graphics mode rather than Direct3D, and D3DWindower started it in a window with clear graphics. After clicking the main menu entry to start a new game, the screen moved up and to the left a bit compared to the window, cutting off a bit of the game and leaving black bars along the right and bottom of the window. Switching DD to DirectDraw rather than Software fixed that problem.

Under Vista/7 maybe try running the program and game as administrator and/or in compatibility mode. In the compatibility options, disabling desktop composition helped a couple people with graphics problems in Divinity 2.
