I played the DarkStar One demo and enjoyed it, so I bought the full game. Unfortunately, the full v1.31 game will not install. It has a "setup.exe" file that opens a Command Prompt window, which says, "Cannot execute setup.exe". I turned off Windows Defender and my anti-virus, deactivated Vista's Data Execution Prevention, rebooted the OS in Safe Mode, made the setup.exe file XP SP2 compatible and right-clicked to run as administrator. Nothing works. I searched the Internet for answers, and only found solutions to problems that occur after the game is installed. I contacted Ascaron technical support, which automatically replied that support for DarkStar One ended in May, 2009. They even erased the official DarkStar Forum, so any useful information there is now denied. Does anyone know how to make this game install?

When you downloaded the game, did it complete successfully? It might be worth trying to download the file with the setup.exe again incase that was somehow corrupted.

Did you buy a retail copy of DarkStar One or download the game from GOG? If so, you can contact GOG support as well.
Yes, it downloaded successfully. In case the first time didn't work, or it got corrupted during unzipping, I downloaded the game twice, but with the same result on attempt number 2.

I didn't get it from GOG, but instead Direct2Drive.

Does direct2drive not have a forum you can attempt to get help on? I've never bought a game from direct2drive so I don't really know how they deliver the game to you digitally.

No, unfortunately no D2D forums. They do have support, but for general sales-type issues, not game-specific. I did contact them, but they referred me to CDV and Ascaron. Of course, Ascaron recently stopped supporting this game (how convenient for them). I also tried the Steam forums, but only found post-installation tech solutions.

Did you do everything in the link?
Ok its showing me a support session ended thing on the link so if your seeing that as well go to the help link at d2d, then check out the installation help, makesure you have installed the game how they want you to using there download manager.

I had recently the same problem with a game from D2D. In my case the problem was that the file path to the 'setup.exe' was too long, or at least that's what i think it was.
I solved the problem by moving the folder with the files i got from D2D to C:\ and run the setup.exe from there.
Naturally, i can't guarantee that this will work for you.
I could not get this link to work. It produced a page that said, "Session expired". I click on "Start new session", but nothing happened.

Oh. I'll give that a try. I originally downloaded the game to a second hard drive, not my C:\ drive.

No joy. Copying it to my C:\ drive produced the same non-result. I also tried burning the game to DVD, and installing from there, but this produced the Command Prompt window with a different error message: "Not enough memory..."

I'm sorry it didn't work.
The only other thing i see getting in the way is the demo. If it was installed on the same machine, i guess you could make sure that all traces of the demo have been removed before trying to install the full game from D2D. Other than that, i don't know what could be causing the problem.
Edit: Also, if you still have the DVD with the game files, you could try to install using AutoRun.exe instead of setup.exe

Seems like the solution is to buy the game from GOG...
:)
Yeah, I tried deleting all "DarkStar" keys from my Windows registry. Again, no success with another attempt to install the full game. In addition, the Zip folder I downloaded from D2D did not contain any AutoRun.exe or .ini files (maybe missing data is the culprit). But now the problem is solved another way -- I requested a refund, and got it. Usually software companies hide behind the "all sales are final" excuse to defraud consumers, so I was pleasantly surprised to get my money back. I'm not sure I want to buy DarkStar again from another source, given the time wasted and frustration on this one. Anyway, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who responded with suggestions to solve this issue. Money is valuable, but time is priceless, so I appreciate your time and effort to help me!

If you want the game gog is probably your best bet, even if it doesn't run straight away which it probably will, gog support is very helpful. They don't give refunds though, so its up to you but if you got it from here you would probably get it working fairly hassle free.

Ok, good to know you got your money back :)
If you do decide to give DarkStar another shot, i would consider Romulus' advice and get if from gog. Unlike D2D, you can get gog support to try and help you if you run into problems.
Edit: Yeah, Ralackk types faster than me :)
