Zed-Avatar: Look at Breath of the Wild.
Look at World of Warcraft.
Look at Halo 2.
Look at Grand Theft Auto 5.
Look at Bioshock.
Look at Metroid Prime.
Look at Bloodborne.
Look at Mass Effect 2.
Sure, I suppose you could dwell on failure and allow that to determine your outlook, and that is your prerogative.

DarklordGriffen: I think it mostly depends on the people who are getting hyped about it, the main issue starts when people start getting this perfect image in their head of what the game is without actually listening to devs/publishers about what the actual game is and what it'll contain.
While there was some Peter Molyneux level shit going on with NMS, i personally think at least 50% of the reason people were disappointed was because some people were expecting the greatest video game of all time out of NMS without taking a look at certain things and keeping their expectations in check, like how the game was going to use procedural generation for almost everything (which usually ends with stuff feeling the same no matter what) and yet so many people seemed to be shocked by the fact that stuff got samey after the first 5 or so planets
Hopefully with the gameplay and the amount they have been talking about it in interviews it'll keep peoples expecations in check
tl;dr
I'd say a good portion of people getting disappointed after hyping shit up is due to them not controlling their imagination and letting their imagination go wild and become what they think the game is
I honestly agree with you in some ways, but I don't agree that misplaced hype was a large reason or only reason as to why no mans sky was so poorly accepted among many gamers. I think maybe they did too good of a job on advertising, and not enough on the actual gameplay. I was looking forward to no mans sky so much, but I was painfully let down by it because it didn't look and feel the way that all the trailers and gameplay shown ahead of release make it look and feel.

Zed-Avatar: Oh absolutely. I saw some very clear indications that most of NMS was going to be Hype. Whenever the Devs have interviews where they start promising the game will have EVERYTHING, then it likely will not. Happened with Eternal Crusade too.
The fact that CDPR has actually highlighted things the game won't have is promising rather than limiting. It means they have well defined scope.
This exactly, I really appreciate CDPR's Honesty with their customers.
