I had a similar issue with the gog.com version and the Graphic Mode Setup was what fixed it. I changed Dos Box's rendering mode to direct draw and it not only stopped being choppy, but it ran so smoothly that I upped the resolution to make it look nice too.
1. # of processors makes no difference to DOSBox since it only uses one.
2. Gigahertz do not mean anything
3. A Core Duo is ancient and is too slow of a processor for the game you are trying to play in DOSBox.
4. For resource demanding games in DOSBox 1996+ It's recommended that you have at least a Core 2 Duo NOT a Core Duo.

HimmlerHimself: I have had it reinstalled and I'm certain it is running through DosBox .74.

1. How is it installed?
2. How is it launched?
3. How do you know which conf file it is using?

HimmlerHimself: I really can't comprehend why I could play Blood with no problems on a computer made in 1997, but I can never get it to work right on a computer with 2 processors that can run CounterStrike just fine. Oh well, maybe I will get to play Blood again in 2017, by then it will be 20 years old and there won't be any excuses for poor performance.

Because you're playing it in an emulator (DosBox) instead of a real DOS machine.
Blood is installed on my hard drive under the name C:/Games/Blood. I launch it by opening DosBOX .74 and typing mount c c:/games, then c:, then cd bood, blood. I have no idea which config file it is using. How can I tell which one it is using. Also, I wanted to know your thoughts on just running it through XP using these directions...http://buildxp.deathmask.net/
I apologize for not replying sooner. I was really pissed off trying to get this game to work while trying to quit smoking, so I decided to just let go of running it on this computer and possibly try buying an old computer and running Windows 98 on it. But then again I don't wanna spend 50-100 dollars to play blood, I only wanna spend 6 : D

If you don't directly tell DOSBox (.73 & .74), what config file you want to use in a command line switch, for XP it will use its default location at %userProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\DOSBox\, or %userProfile%\AppData\Local\DOSBox\ for Vista/7. If you don't have one there, it will generate one there for you.
If you want to force a specific .conf file use the -conf command switch ie: dosbox.exe -conf yourConf.conf, this is effectively what GoG has configured with the included .lnk files.
You can read more about it on the DOSBox wiki: http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Dosbox.conf

Well I know how to tweak the config file, I have changed some of the settings like the resolution to the smallest possible and cycles to max, which has improved frames per second, but there are still parts of the game that get down to a very low framerate and it's near impossible to play on extra crispy.
By the way, has anyone tried the WinXP Build at DeathMask.net?

DOSBox will be slow in places, and some levels will be down right unplayable depending on your hardware. The good part is DOSBox will get better as more development goes into it.
If you really want to get a better performance boost, you could take the effort to compile DOSBox form source code on your specific hardware, I was able to get an average of 10FPS better out of a locally built DOSBox executable, but that was under Linux. Compiling DOSBox on XP is a little more involved than just typing "make DOSBox"
You might also try one of the experimental CVS builds (http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=9306), but I doubt that there will be much optimization so soon after the release of .74
Now, if you are still looking for what specific conf file you are running, you'll just have to include a few lines in your config file in the autorun section at the bottom, and be diligent to edit them whenever you update/copy them:
echo running x.conf
pause
I've tried the BuildXP guide before, but I seem to remember that there were some problems with it after Microsoft released SP3 for XP, but it has been a while since I've tried it so I can't really verify any problems, or success.
You could also try Krypto's "Improved Blood on XP" instructions found here: http://forums.transfusion-game.com/viewtopic.php?t=1074
DOSBox is good for networking.
If you are just playing in the episodes or SP maps, Build on XP should work well for you.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to wait until the next version of DosBOX comes out to try again. The idea I've gotten from asking about this subject on random forums is that mostly the newest and fastest computers are able to run Blood in DosBOX with a decent rate. Lots of people on Vogonz have told me Blood puts a high demand on DosBOX, which I can see why with all the detail in Blood compared to games like Doom, Quake, Wolf 3d that I play in DosBOX. I did try the Build XP but I couldn't even get Blood to start that way, most likely because of SP3.
Well, I am going to be getting a new computer soon and I was wondering what specs would be optimal for Blood on Dosbox. If anyone could give me some advice on this I would appreciate it very much. : )
I've been running it on a 2.33 GHz, Core2 Duo (E6550) at 800x600 without much trouble, and I think it's getting to be more than 2 years old at this point.
I have had it lag out on some user made maps, but it's been fine for all the retail stuff.
Generally the faster the CPU, the better it should run it. If you're local bigbox retailer is nice, they might even let you try it out on the computer to see how well it runs the game. It should load fine off a USB flash drive.
I got an iMac and now I can get it to over 150 fps at 320x200. The game runs perfectly now. Thanks to all of you who helped me with tweaks and fixes to get a higher framerate. Now I can finally enjoy this game : D
