Hickory: Yes I speak from experience. Very many years of experience. Read the forums. Do your homework, don't assume that because *you* don't have problems that the issue does not exist. I will say it again: it is real; it exists; believe what you will.

twilek.446: *** Rant ***

according to the developer of the mod it is no problem to change resolution afterwards at all, you just need to run the installation program again http://forums.gibberlings3.net/index.php?showtopic=21687
I rest my case. The developer knows this issue, and why it occurs, an has built in an option to *convert* saved games because of it. Please feel free to continue ranting.

Well, there is no such option in the latest version of the installer, so where do you mean you can find this option?

Here is the part of the code (v3.05) that prompts you:

***
@30 = ~If you have games saved at another resolution and don't update them,
they will be unusable. If you update them, all visited areas will be marked
as not explored.

Do you want to update your save games? Y/N~

And if you read the code more carefully you can see that this only apply to Planescape Tormet and BG1, but since we are using BGT we only have BG2 files even for the BG1 part of the game. Here you can read the devleoper of the mod say the same http://forums.gibberlings3.net/index.php?showtopic=21579&p=179520
"He's talking about BG2, which doesn't have the save game problem which BG1 and PST had"

Here you can also read that game saves does not contain any info about your resoluion

I would defer to you on that point, but my experience says otherwise. I stopped using the widescreen mod because of it, and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. You say your experience is different, and that's great, but many people do have issues with it.

Ok, nice, but to finish this discussion I guess I have to use your own words again: don't assume that because *you* have problems then everybody else must have it as well. It may be as you say that many people have problems with it, but to quote the developer of the plugin it might be because they are "doing it wrong" *, it can be caused by another mod or something completely else, it doesn't necessary have to do with the widescreen mod. And if we shall trust the developer of the plugin "The uninstall process of WSM works fine (and changes resolution correctly) for 99.9% of people" **, which means that most people seems to have no problems at all with save files (me included) when trying to change resolution or uninstall the plugin. If you do not want to recommend this plugin it is totally fine, but before you rest your case next time, you shall probably try to be a little more humble, and understand that if you actually are you can maybe learn something, and also realize that you maybe not know everything yet *** ... It is really not very polite to say to someone that he shall go home and do his homework, especially when the stated "facts" under discussion wasn't such hard facts after all...

Oh, that's rich; so deliciously condescending; so exquisitely ironic. Thank you, mother.

Yes, isn't it ironic how accurate this bias seems to be, even when refuted one fails to admit it and instead keeps on playing vainglorious and make a fool of oneself, instead of just learn from the situation and the bias and just say "Yes, I was wrong, sorry for this and for my rudeness". It seems like the Dunning–Kruger effect never fails on its accuracy ;)

Seriously, if you start being rude to a person you can never expect anything else in return, especially when you do not have the guts to admit you are wrong and also fail to pardon yourself for being impolite. If you think it is so condescending when me just linking to some formal information on a well recognized bias, you shall probably ask yourself why I linked to this and why you even get so offend about it. People that can actually admit that they are wrong is so much more respectful and trustworthy than people that just keep up their smart aleck attitude in all weathers, either you get offended by this or you learn from it, the choise is yours.. If you choose to get offended you just prove the bias even further.

But well, I guess this is a hopeless case. Good night and good bye.

Haha, and still you just continuing this Dunning–Kruger proving attitude and still don't get the point, that is even more ironic. ;) Is it really so hard for you to stop this silliness and just say "Ok, i was wrong, sorry for being impolite, my bad" ? As it is now you just keep on making a fool of yourself, believe me...

Yes, it obviously was that hard.
Just so you know. This lurker agrees with Twilek. Nobody knows it all Hickory. Just admitting a mistake loses you far less face.

If anyone cares, I also agree with Twilek.

I've never experienced any problem with the Widescreen Mod. Whatever problem Hickory was having, it was most likely between the chair and the keyboard, but admitting that must be harder for him than just blaming the mod.

dillonbarnett98: So after installing windows 8.1, the widescreen mod only shows the game full screen if I have it set to the full resolution of my monitor which is 1920x1080. But It's a laptop screen so i would play it at 1280x720 so that everything wasn't too small. So now if I try to play it at that resolution it is just a small box in the center of the screen. Only 1920x1080 will be full screen. I even tried changing the resolution of the whole system before launching the game and it is the same. Anyone know of a solution?
avatar
twilek.446: I have the exact same problem as you when installing the GOG-version of BG1 and 2. I have tried both with and without widescreen mod and it doesn't matter, I get the same problem in either way. I get a rectangle in the middle of the screen with a black border around as long as I do not disable 3d acceleration in the config. I have Win 8.1 and a nvidia gt740m card. The funny thing tough is that I have installed the CD-version on 3 other computers (one with a similar nvidia card and two other with integrated intel graphic cards, one with win 8.1 and two with win 7) without getting this problem, so I start to wonder if this has anything to do with the gog version of the game.

The only solution I have found is to disable 3d acceleration.
Also, this is why I was reading this post in the first place. I get this. Similar computer setup.

I believe I have tried every conceivable solution other than disabling 3D acceleration (combinations of resolutions, compatibility modes, with or without widescreen mod, changing the primary video card). Disabling that works, but I feel my graphics get ugly. Especially the edges of the fog of war. If anybody knows how to restore that I'd love to hear.

The other option is just running the game in 1920*1080, which is my native resolution. But that way my party consists of ants crawling around in a tiny bubble of light amidst the darkness. Beautifull, but not so playable. I've read a suggestion on the BG EE boards to increase the field of vision (the bubble of light), but that would probably mess with combats, weapon ranges, AI and such.

I blamed my Intel integrated graphics for not scaling the smaller resolution game output to my monitors native resolution at first (I've read about similar problems with other, even relatively new games with an integrated/specialised 3D chipset combination), but now I'm not so sure anymore. For one, in my nVidia control panel (which has very little options due to the integrated graphics chip being 'primary') I have forced BGT to be run by the nVidia card. Same problem. Also, when I change the resolution of my desktop, it does scale properly (no black borders, all icons and such appear larger).

So, I'm beginning to think it might be the GOG version. Twilek, you stated you have run the CD version on 3 other computers, but have you run it on the same computer that causes these problems for you? Maybe you've already said so, but I didn't quite understand what you meant exactly.

In that case, maybe this needs to be reported in detail tot GOG?

Thanks for reading and hope somebody can help. Just hearing the BG1 background noises again makes my nose run after 15 years :D
