GOG games are DRM free for single player. Multiplayer typically calls for a one time registration with a serial key that is provided to your account. This has basically always been the case with GOG (at least as long as I have been a member). It used to be you had to submit a support request for each game that had multiplayer to receive your key, now they are handily provided in your "My Account" game shelf.

Gydion: GOG has sold other games that used to have Steamworks for DRM/multiplayer stripped out as it was non-functional. Would you have preferred GOG to similarly break the online functionality for AoW3 which actually does work, but requires a Triumph account (which is specifically noted on the gamecard)?

EPurpl3: The LAN will require internet so will have DRM. I don't know if you kids ever heard of direct TCP/IP connection, it was used in many games before, u did not required a account, username, password, authentication, etc. I am afraid that the only purpose of this authentication is to check the serial number of this game so this game HAS DRM. Shame on you GOG.
Except GOG, in the past, have asked us whether we would be okay with games that need keys and stuff for multiplayer. And we were.

I think it's a perfectly fine compromise.

We? Who exactly are you talking about here ? the 1% of gog customers that actually visit the forums? While I dont really have that big of a problem with the cd key because that has been around for a while but it does require a third party account which most people probably wont expect when they buy a game from gog because they advertise as being 100% DRM free
You buy it. You own it. 100% DRM-free.DRM, also called copy protection, tries to control you and your games. We don’t believe in that - all of the games on GOG.com come without any DRM at all!
Even if it is just the multiplayer the game has DRM and is being sold on a site that says it is 100% DRM free and that is pissing people off and I cannot really blame them for that

A fraction of any site's userbase will be involved in decisions. But the game is DRM free. There is nothing here that stops you playing the game. The '3rd-party account' is in use to stop the multiplayer component being split by platform (which would result in Steam being the "only" platform if you wanted to play MP). Is that not acceptable?

GOG also notify you of this on the game's page, so I don't see what the issue is.
I didn't buy the game for multiplayer as I would probably die from boredom waiting for people to take their turn. I bought this for the ability to play on randomly generated maps, and also the editor. The last game I had these choices was HoMM2 so I'm happy. The only thing I have a gripe with is 'guest' - change it to something like 'home' or 'local'.

Also, didn't Gog advertise that this had hotseat multiplayer? What's wrong with that?

You do not understand, do I have to draw you a scheme? are you stupid or something? is a difference between a serial key and DRM, the game will check that serial key every time you want to play multiplayer, LAN or TCP/IP which none of this connection do not require that on a non DRM game. A serial key is usually used for a ONE TIME REGISTRATION of the product. This is WITH DRM and is NOT OK.

Well, then.

How do you propose that:
1. Triumph make sure only legitimate copies can play MP?
2. Triumph have a MP system that does not split the community?
Triumph could easily have made this game Steamworks-only, but they didn't.

Also; insulting people is pretty stupid, y'know?

coldalarm: so I don't see what the issue is.
The issue is that GOG advertise as 100% DRM free games and this game has DRM and some people may have a problem with that, myself included and I have no interest in multiplayer if I get the game.

How do I know I can trust them if they keep making exceptions? If they started going down a road they may not be able to go back and things get worse and worse, you may think this sounds a bit extreme and you are probably right but people are upset and have a valid reason to be

I was not insulting peoples, I was just asking because i just wanted to be sure of it, now I am.

1. Who cares?
2. This game shouldn't have been available on GOG.
This is all so incredibly moot.

Direct IP connection and LAN is (on the way) already outside of any "DRM" (Account system) scheme so you really cannot complain.

I see your point. In your case, you can unplug the internet cable and still play. It's that easy.
i'd only class this as DRM if it stopped me playing hotseat games with my friends and stuff.. i see no problems with log in to play MP or don't and the only thing cut off is multiplayer. so yeah not DRM.

if this game had DRM then i would have to log into their servers and authenticate the game every single time i want to play a single-player game versus the AI.

LOL, so if they have cut off the multiplayer with DRM does it mean that it DOESNT have DRM? :)) so the existence of DRM means that it does not have DRM? amazing :o

LAN will require a online authentication, so you wont be able to play LAN without internet. Possible hotseat too. That sounds like DRM to me.

i do believe that when they said they were gonna add Lan and pbem you won't need to log in + i have no reason to log in to play a hotseat game with my friends, DRM and logging into play multiplayer are far different things

that's like saying the original dawn of war games had DRM because i had to log into gamespy to play online, or various other games that used gamespy back in the day.

i could start a hotseat game without logging in and i'd imagine they'll add the same features for lan and perhaps PBEM as well stop spouting nonsense because you dislike having to log into a server to play multiplayer if you wanna play single-player you don't gotta log in.

I like how people don't really seem to realize that a multiplayer game with *any* sort of platform will always have *some* form of centralized service behind it simply to create/negotiate accounts. Well ok, games newer than 2000, that is.

In other words, if it weren't the triumph account, then it'd be Steam.

Only, then we'd not have outside releases at all, or they couldn't play together. And, we'd all pay extra in the EU because Steam doesn't do anything about the price difference.

This is such a first world problem...
