Restore the old PM system
you entirely missed out the part about the "block" functionality too - saldy now have to set "chat" to "friends only" due to spammers, scammers and fuckwits
Yeah, that makes sense. Voted.
Yes. You replaced a perfectly functional PM system with a mess of a "chat" system where you can only see two lines of text at a time, and I'm lucky if it even loads, instead of giving me the eternally spinning circle of death. Why? Did you have *any* reason, other than "change good?"
"I feel like this is just going to make the lovely community... stupider." Yes this change is like swapping emails for Twitter. Pressing enter sends a message. I'd like to send a message regarding the recent changes, and I'll keep it short: fuck off :(
Technically there is not much difference between chat and PM, and they could internally be handled by the same system.
But there is a very great difference (for me) in terms of how they should look and feel, and also - even if it's only nomenklatura - my expectations on how it's supposed to work.
Chat UI: Small textbox, enter sends message, messages are sorted ascending (newest on bottom).
Seeing incoming chat message implies for me: Some want to chat and is waiting for an answer _now_.
PM UI: Large textbox, enter creates a paragraph, for sending click button (after i.e. proof reading). Messages are sorted descending (newest on top).
Seeing a PM notification (ideally also by email - something they dropped entirely) means for me: Check when I have time, and answer when I see fit.
I don't see why we can't have both, it should be no problem for GOG to use the same infrastructure, with slightly different views and a flag in the DB to discern between chat and PM.
@penumbren: While we wait, try asking for that to be added to the Barefoot Essentials userscript. It's simple enough and self-contained enough that it's a perfect candidate for a userscript-based interim solution.
At the very, very least, increasing the size of the text box for chat would be a blessing. I just sent a very long message and it was not fun trying to read it through for typos.
Fully agree with this wish. The PM system is excellent for sending long and thought out messages. I really enjoyed it that way, and did it quite regularly. Chat has its place, but it simply cannot replace PMs. They are two completely different ways to communicate, with different styles and different emotions. I'm very disappointed that PMs have been "retired". I feel like this is just going to make the lovely community... stupider.
Voted. However GOG could restore some functionalities of the old PM system and implement them into the new chat system, such as the message box growing whenever you type more than 2 lines worth of text, etc. Certainly can't deny I preferred the old PM system.
And please re-add the option to get a notification by email when a new message has arrived.
I fully agree. This Chat system is not an efficient or satisfying replacement of the old PM system. One can't even proofread what they typed if it's longer than two lines.
The only good thing that it brought is proper time stamps.
