Keep the galaxy client optional completed
This is NOT completed.
Yes, you can use the web-page to install Most games, but some Require galaxy to run. Gwent requires galaxy to run.
Most games with online multiplayer also require it.
The store doesn't list galaxy as a requirement for games....
This is not completed since you are required to have it installed and be online on the galaxy client to be able to play multiplayer part of some games ...
so in the year of 2021, is this wish completed or not? it says completed, but then others disagree.
As of Dec 26, 2020, this wish is definitely still NOT completed. Venom from GOG has claimed it's always going to be 100% optional (see below comment). Here are some counterarguments as to why this is obviously not true. 1) "Can be uninstalled": For that you'd clearly have to install it first, hence in this case it's NOT 100% OPTIONAL. 2) Ability to opt-out when installing a bundle installer: You can easily overlook that choice and end up with an installed Galaxy client, but more fundamentally, you already downloaded it as part of the bundle, hence in this case it's NOT 100% OPTIONAL. 3) There are "offline backup" installers which aren't bundled with the Galaxy client. The naming and blatant hiding away of these installers is downright deceptive and makes it easy to overlook this option, hence in this case it's NOT 100% OPTIONAL. 4) As long as there are games sold on here that require Galaxy to run, for all those cases, it's NOT 100% OPTIONAL. For these reasons, I humbly implore GOG staff to either fix those issues, or mark this wish at NOT COMPLETED.
»Tooth and Tail« will not be released for Linux on GOG on the official release date (12th of September 2017) due to its requirement of Galaxy for the multiplayer component of the game. So even if you only want to play the single player mode of this game you are not able to download it for Linux. The Galaxy client is indeed not (!) optional.
GWENT requires galaxy to install, 'nuf said
This is marked as "completed", yet GOG still allows publishers to lock multiplayer content behind DRM (Shadow Warrior 2, Neverwinter Nights, etc).
Considering that downloads now default to Galaxy installers and there's no user setting to default to non-Galaxy installers, it doesn't seem honest to mark this as completed.
No galaxy for me!! Hate steam approach. Love SIMPLE DOWNLOAD ONLY.
Galaxy beta broke games for me already, this is not a completed wish.
This is not complete until Galaxy hooks are removed from the executables of games where they have been inserted. I am not at all pleased to find Galaxy has been added to my games, and the only GOG games I feel safe playing are those that I downloaded before Galaxy was available. I do not trust Galaxy and want no part of it in my games. Until Galaxy integration is removed or made optional, I'm done buying more games from GOG.
Despite of the fact that this wish has been tagged "completed", I know of at least one case where this is actually not true: "The Witcher Adventure" Game in its current state (RC20) NEEDS the galaxy client to work. There are quite a number of posts out there that confirm this (if you don't trust me)...
Hi Everyone! I would like to assure you, that Galaxy Client will be and is 100% optional. Yes, currently the Galaxy Launcher (a smaller version of the eventual Client) comes bundled with a few games (Double Dragon, The Witcher Adventure Game) but also is optional, and can be uninstalled. Once we release the full Galaxy Client, it will not be bundled with any game installers available on "My Account", and will be a standalone, optional product.
How about keeping the Galaxy client optional in it's entirety - not even having to install the service with a game if you so choose? That's what they have planned... right?
I don't think this would work. For those who are susceptible to this, who'll chase achievements even if they become a chore and they're not having fun anymore, it won't make a difference even if they're completely hidden. Those won't be the players that will choose to turn off the feature. As long as they know achievements and a score competition is going on somewhere, their addictive tendency won't let them just hide and ignore it.
I like this idea. They said the Galaxy client is supposed to be optional anyway, so keeping with that philosophy hopefully this aspect within Galaxy will also be optional. I find the achievements in Steam fairly annoying and I hate that they don't seem to let you opt out of them unless you want to play offline. If they have other parallel things to Steam like recording length of game playtime etc I hope those are also optional and can be turned off.
Sounds good to me. Seconded.
