GOG may be operating under less than open licensing terms, but perhaps instead of having to constantly troubleshoot user issues, updating software, and so on, that instead GOG could just casually place a "Plays great in X instead" somewhere on a game page. There's many clones, source ports, and means of playing a game that are much less of a bother than dealing with original executables.

But GOG has been shown to not be trusted with those, either. So maybe just sticking to suggestions of their use. Even that could be contentious with some games, as they have more ports than they were even originally released for. (Quake, Doom, et al.)
