Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord completed
You can vote here for the original 1981 game: www.gog.com/wishlist/games/wizardry_proving_grounds_of_the_mad_overlord_1981
We might need an "(original)" wishlist entry.
Was feeling the Wizardry itch. Came by to see if it happened to be here yet. Still no luck. Here's hoping. Tell your Wizardry friends - or even your Harry Potter friends that this "Wizardry" is totally a Harry Potter game and to come up vote it! ;)
so... you can actually download wizardry and run it using dosbox. I would still prefer to have it under the umbrella (and additional quality/safety checks) of GOG ... for those interested, you can find it via WizardryArchives
Adding my voice to the request for this classic.
It seems very odd and slightly incongruous that this ancient classic cRPG isn't yet available on GOG. Considering I lack originals of Wizardry 1-5, I would certainly buy this.
RE: Decreasing Stats when Levelling Up.
This is a "feature" of version 2 of the DOS version.
Version 2 was on the 3.5" disk edition. When booted it clearly says "Bootloader V 2.00". It is also the version on the Ultimate Wizardry Archives.
Version 1 (which does not show any version number on boot up) is the one that came with the 5.1/4" disk version.
I own both versions and I have played the first 4 levels of each last week to test again.
Version 2 is cruel: by level 3, my Bishop character actually had stats that were BELOW the minimum requirements for the class!
Version 1 instead was fine. It did reduce a maximum of 1 stat per level but only occasionally and almost always for one of the stats not relevant to the class (like reducing Piety for a thief).
Wizardry 3 is always Version2 both on 5.1/4 and 3.5.
Please be aware that, even on emulators, it is not possible to transfer characters between a 5.1/4" version and a 3.5" version.
One last thing: although the UWA versions have images with 320K size, they are in fact a compressed 3.5" version.
i don't know if anyone knew this, but it is the 40th anniversary this year, lets get this on here!
An extremely polished game. It amazes me how they got so many things right on what was one of the first commercial cRPGs on the market. I would buy this without question.
Please-please-please?
Just hoping this happens one day.
I, too, would love to see this reincarnated -- Kilg0re, can you do anything for this? :)
Still waiting on this.
I believe there's some weird legal thing about getting the previous Wizardry games on here... but I am throwing down my vote for Wizardry as well.
Isn't it a free game now? But it could be a nice addiction to free games like Akalabeth.
1981 Wizardry Proving Grounds Mad Overlord on ebay now
Just recently played Wizardry 1 for the first time, and I was surprised how good such an ancient (1981!) game was. Most of the trappings of the turn based "blobber" genre was already there.
It wasn't quite as hard as I was led to believe. I like the fact that just like the Bard's Tale series you can play it Iron Man. Even if your entire party dies you can usually send down a rescue party to get the bodies back to the Temple.
Wzardry 2 was easier and shorter, and not quite as fun.
Wizardry 3 starts very hard and you have to do quite a bit of grinding, but after that it really picks up.
If you you think Wizardry 6-7 and Might&Magic 3-5 was too easy, give the old Wizardries a try. They are available as abandonware on various sites.
I would definitely buy proving grounds of the mad overlord.
This is a definitive dungeon crawler, first to offer a 3D view of the hallway one was walking through, and first to offer a group that you manage rather than single person only. It's best to wiki this game and learn more about it and the historical stuff surrounding it. I don't know if GOG realizes how big the Japanese market became for this game series, but you would see enormous international sales if you finally port this over.
I love this game! A must have on GOG. You guys rule! www.topbulk.org/
I should point out the DOS version of Wizardry 1 (and maybe 2-4, but I haven't played the DOS versions of those) has a bug when any character levels up: even though decreasing stats is normal and an expected element of gameplay, it's not supposed to be as common as stats going up. In the DOS version, there is what looks to be an equi-probable chance of a stat going down as another stat going up. In all other ports I've played, stats going down is significantly less frequent. I'd be curious if anyone successfully got a Ninja in the DOS version of Wizardry without cheats. If this game ever makes it on GOG, I would kindly ask that -- assuming the source code for the DOS version even exists in this universe anymore -- it be a fixed version where stats-down/stats-up probabilities are in line with the original Apple II version.
give us Wizardry and take my money, please!
PLEASE bring this over to Gog, extra experience points if you also include a Mac port! Would love to see all the Wizardry games and would quickly buy them all.
Yes! I am having a bear of a time getting the early games working using DOSBOX. If you sell it and make it easy, I'll buy!
I played the ever-loving crap out of 7, I would happily buy all of these for the full experience.
yes, please bring us the wizardry series :) and also wizards & warriors!
I have played Wizardry 8 several times through, and done my best to experience as much of the game as possible in my almost 2 decades of living. The amount of possible characters that you can pull from the pool of races and classes is incredible, and the game itself is a shining beacon example of what a RPG should be. I would recommend this game to anyone that has even the slightest interest in RPGs, especially traditional types, and I myself would buy it the second it was added to this site (assuming such a thing happens). I would likely buy many of the previous titles in this series, as well.
I've never played Wizardry before, but I can definitely say I would like to, and that the games seem rather elusive to track down. It'd be great if I could just get them from GOG.
I signed up here just now because I wanted to make sure that Wizardry 1-8 can run on Windows 7 or Windows Vista before I consider buying it. Is this the case folks? and can I buy it from this site or Ebay/Amazon?
Though I've been familiar with the Wizardry name for as long as I can remember, I've never actually seen, let alone played, any of the games. I recently started reading about them after getting into the Might and Magic series and it sounds like GOG would be a far richer site if it had these games in its catalogue.
I am happy to say that I can run Wiz 8 ( still have the CDs ) on my WIndows 7, 64 bit machine. Arguably one of the best RPG games ever made. I'd buy it in a sec if i saw it here though. Can't beat DRM free games :)
I have played many cRPG's including Ultimas, M&Ms, Bard's Tales, Wasteland, Fallouts, and many many more...BUT, my absolute favorites were the Wizardry series!!! Part 8, I especially liked, and would buy any and all of these games that GOG.com can bring me!!!
With some tweaking, I'm still able to get my old CD copy of Wiz8 to work on my new machine--that is to say, I still play it off and on, all the time! I would totally go for either a Wiz1-8 inclusive super pack or even a Wiz1-7 pack w/ Wiz8 sold separately. TAKE MY MONEY! And long live first-person party-based RPGs in the classic spirit of M&M 6/7 and Wiz7/8!
Please bring back all the Wizardry. What is missing in todays gaming world are games like Crusaders and Cosmic!! Long Live Party Based Turn Based RPGS'...WITH Character Creation...No pre-made npc's for party members!!
I saw an original boxed copy of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (the very first game in the series) for about $149, must be pretty rare stuff. It was on eBay from Draconians Games if any of you are interested.
Wizardry love 2 go for GOG!! :)
DO WANT BADLY!!! pleeeease especially 8
I love 7 and 8. I'm playing 8 now infact! I have wiz 7 gold which is a great game (I must have played it through 6-7 times) but now it won't run on my windows 7 pc. If you bring out wiz 7 gold I'll buy it for sure. I love it when you get into that Gorn armory and deck out your low level characters with leather armor, spears and bows!
Just stopped by to share a little Wizardry love.
Wizardry 1-8. WANT!
I can't find a copy of Wizardry 8 to download! Please acquire the rights to this - why would the developers not want the extra royalties!
Wizardry is an incredible series, on par with Might & Magic, such a pack would be huge to me.
Wizardry VIII is one of the most brilliant cRPGs ever made. It's something that GOG must have. There is no discussion abou it :)
Wizardry 7: Crusaders of the Dark Savant, is one of my all-time favorites. It's up there with Ultima 6 and Ultima 7pt1 & 2. The current versions widely avaiilable require DOSbox to run, and the audio is off. A nice cleaned up GOG version would be sweet.
Wizardry 8 should be on gog, one of the best turnbased RPG ever made!
Bane of the Cosmic Forge and Crusaders of the Dark Savant were some of my favorite games ever. I can't believe the Wizardry series isn't included on GOG.
Give us Wizardry!
I thought 8 was a great game but where's the love for 7? That had imo by far the best mix of story/engine of any of the crpgs I played at the time (Wizardry Gold would be an ok bonus) C'mon how many of you spent an hour rolling for a faerie ninja? :-P
Be nice to not have to play the oldest games on an emulator. (I had DOS 5.25" floppy version but they had some weirdo copy protection and only worked properly on a VERY few machines/drive combos... yet another copy of VIII would just be a bonus.... a surprisingly good ending to an OLD series given that happened with Ultima & M&M...)
Bane of the Cosmic Forge is still one of my all time favourites. Stuff the graphics, the game is the thing and it was a great game.
