Action-adventure game developed/published by Bothtec in 1986, originally for the NEC PC-98 and later for various Japanese PCs (game was coded in C, but is most tightly optimized for the PC-98). Only the opening and ending texts need simple hacking and translation: in-game characters are either in English or stylized gibberish.

You play not one role, but many, as you guide a disembodied shadow of being into living vessels to explore and escape from the Relics Point temple. Through body-snatching, you can use different individuals' abilities and social status to interact with unique characters in this science fantasy realm, most of whom do not enjoy mischief. Expect plenty of rooms to map, obscure puzzles to solve, and multiple endings based on which choices you make (whether to abstain from combat or slaughter all in your wake). Back in the mid-'80s, this level of role-playing and adventuring was unprecedented, accompanied by a barebones manual where gamers expected a hint-book and other feelies.

Though not the most challenging game to beat, Relics plays well because, after you've grown into the control scheme and committed to memory a majority of the game's rooms, there comes forth a desire to see all potential endings. Giger-like artwork lines the walls and defines the strangers you meet; music is forbidden, with sound coming from footsteps and intermittent actions. Much like Prince of Persia three years later, Relics has excellent animation for its platform, impressive given that most Japanese computers lacked hardware scrolling and sprite support. D4 Enterprises, proprietor of Bothtec's back-catalog, has uploaded most ports of Relics to their Project EGG service for free (subscribers only); a collection of these ports + the next three games in the Relics series (all for Windows) would be an excellent business cooperation between them and GOG.
