Pathways Into Darkness
The comment by user Document was super helpful, but perhaps needed some context. His link: simplici7y.com/items/aleph-one-pathways-into-darkness is the windows/Linux port project you are looking for.
Really wishing for this to hit GOG one day. This was my first ever "FPS" game. really want to play it again.
Please GOG,,, this one!

Where is this game being ported by GOG?
Come on GOG.... get this one out there!
Actually we're both correct: Marathon, PID, Doom etc. are both 3D, but the engines used are not rendered the same way as "full 3D" is for want of a better word.
Engines like Tomb Raider's are square tile based wireframes similar to other 3D, but more restricted.
Torch, Vulcan, Aleph One, id Tech 0 and 1 (0.5 for ROTT: DW) and Build render the world by drawing 2D lines and shapes from such and mapping them with invisible rays coming from the player's position.

marathon.bungie.org/story/manuals/Marathon-Trilogy-Manual.pdf
Scroll down to Forge on that last one.
2.5D is just a simpler term for such types of 3D engines. Vulcan, Build and id Tech 1 are still used today respectively as Aleph One, Eduke and the Shadow Warrior Redux editor, and GZDoom.
darkredshift, Respectfully I have to disagree with the assertion the game is not 3d. Certainly the monsters in it are not rendered as 3d models like many many games they are sprites. The game itself is 3d. Think of it this way, (in the game) you are walking parallel t o a wall, you come upon a doorway which you walk through, you turn around and look at it and you see the other side, that is 3 dimensions. I think this whole 2.4d 2.5 nonsense is some companies way to belittle other companies '3D' to better their own engine. It seems that we are mistaking 'Physics emulation/game mechanics' with whether or not the game is 3d.
Morpheus666: actually, it was not 3D, it was 2.5D but more like 2.4 at best. Marathon on the other hand was true 2.5D and Halo was of course full 3D. still, I'd take Aleph One over id tech 1 (Doom engine) or Build any day. you can jump gaps and climb ledges using explosions and staircases made of bullets! which is a lot more than a rocket blast into a watery box that doom had to offer, or platforming challenges where you couldn't look up or down when of course, you could in Marathon (albeit not all the way) and Doom's platforming only worked in Brutal Doom running of GZ Doom as you could jump and crouch and look up/down all the way and rocket jumping actually worked with lots of practice.
Also they got rid of the shitty hotplates with paint on them replacing them with shallow pools like what M1A1 and Duke Nukem 3D did. (except the deep swimming sections in Duke 3D of course.)
Also, the PC version should replace the old crystal desgins with that of the Chaos Emeralds or even the Elements of Harmony if you're feeling sassy. Dead talking crystal=kindness, cryokinesis=Generosity, Pyrokineisis=Laughter, Lighting=Loyalty, Earthquake=Honesty, Petrification=Magic where this analogy breaks down.
I got pathways on a mac emulator and it isn't too laggy but I would recommend a proper Windows release on GOG as my Anti-virus software freaked out and thought it was a Trojan. I didn't find anything in the resultant offline scan but you can't be too careful.
Also, many of Pathways and Marathon features were plagiarised by Looking glass for System shock 1 and 2. Metroidvania gameplay, use of explosives and a real-time, time limit, crystals replaced with Augs/Psi powers, Audio logs instead of talkative corpses/computer terminals, SHODAN instead of Durandal/Tycho, Pattern Buffers, Tau Ceti etc.
Was there an advantage in repeating what I'd already said about Marathon Aleph One?
Did Man Up Time's remake of Pathways Into Darkness not work for you? I haven't tried it myself.
Now if only Bungie's Oni would be updated for modern setups, and multiplayer completed, I could retire my retro rig.
The Marathon Trilogy is already available for free to play through the Aleph One project. Alas, Pathways Into Darkness never got fully ported the way Marathon and co. did. I hope more people take interest in PiD because I would very much like to play that game. It is, after all, a Good Old Game.
Belay that: Man Up Time have released a total conversion Pathways Into Darkness for OS X 10.6: manuptimestudios.com/pathways-into-darkness/
That should make it attainable for anyone desperate to (re)play it -- and make it considerably more feasible a Windows-compatible release could be developed in time.
(And whenever I wrote "PitD" I meant "PiD" of course. Mea culpa. Not to be confused with www.gog.com/game/pid )
Bungie delivered (Minotaur;) Pathways Into Darkness; Marathon (2: Durandal; Infinity); Halo (ad nauseam). Perhaps the protagonists of each leg of the journey are completely unrelated... but maybe not. There seem to be too many common threads tying them together.
Marathon was the first game ever to introduce the concept of rocket jumping (although at the time we called it "grenade-hopping") -- yet despite this, even Marathon was not 3D. It was exceptionally clever at managing everything it needed to without having to invest in actual 3D. When we were all enjoying the marvels of Marathon on the Macintosh, our poor IBM-compatible peers were lumbered with the clunky, flat Doom II - a pathetic competitor to the mighty Marathon!
Since Marathon wasn't full true 3D, there's no way its predecessor Pathways Into Darkness was. PitD was simpler than Marathon.
There have been proposals to collaborate on redelivering PitD: forums.bungie.org/story/?noframes;read=62644
There have even been attempts to do so (last updated 2009): sourceforge.net/projects/pidr/
and using the highly successful Aleph One system that has brought the Marathon series to modern setups (last updated 2007): bighouse.bungie.org/pathways/
But if enough people want to see this title actually make it into the 21st Century, I suspect we will need to resort to kickstarter or other crowdfunding to make it a worthwhile priority. There's a limit to how much reconstruction people will contribute in their hobby time (Linux being an example). If you look at what Keiran Lovett accomplished in just a month using Maya and the Unity Engine, a little financial backing incentive could take his impressive prototype a long way (last update 2013): www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/60863198/0/0 keiranlovett.com/article/pathways-into-darkness
It looks like he has the skills and attitude right.
It was a FPSRPG, but not 2d, it was 3d. This will be a challenge to port. My understanding is the source code is lost, some files in the game are encrypted and still to this day some new conversations are still being 'found' during game play. I would be first in line to buy this gem.
This game was a FPSRPG (2d) made by BUNGIE (think Halo) way back in the day that had a good and well integrated story. You're a cold war era commando that has been sent by the government to investigate and stop any potential threat at an ancient Mayan pyramid where there are myths and rumors of an ancient dreaming god awakening... However once your team finally finds it everything goes to pot, and its up to you to find them and figure out whats happening.
This would be sweet if it could get a port. I still have it but can't use it due to lack of a working OS emulator that can run it, as well as a a copy of the program that I backed up the manual with ....
This was my favorite game when I was a kid...
I know it was a Mac-only title (and used the Mac window interface) but I want to play this on my PC again.
