jouzer pkkilleru has it right. I did exactly as they said and it works perfectly. My version was crashing into a black screen and had to hard reset my laptop. I'm running Windows 11, by the way. Playing Gearhead Garage again! Thanks!
Democrab I've still got my OG modded install of this game from the 90s. If anyone wants the modfiles, I've uploaded them to archive.org here: archive.org/details/172-carstogearheadgarage
Just extract to the Data/Cars folder and you're good to go.
LaLee_Chariot You need to apply all patches from the GHGMultiUpdater, then get the d3d.vd file from Nelson's Piquet Grand Prix game and put it in Gearhead Garage/Data. It works flawlessly on Windows 10 this way.
Ostrovercove actualy. it fixed the crash i had on my xp virtual machine. wich mean i won't have to download those vista iso.
Ostrovercove nah. i tryed. but i'm gonna try to use this combination on my xp VM and in a vista VM. (very sad that i lost my era machine with integrated graphic. it was just the very best to run that game)
onecoldruben I would pay $10 for a working copy of this game on my Win10 system. Well $9.99 really.
GJerycho @Ostrovercove, I've found another method, which in my case worked on win 10 64bit. I've did everything pkkilleru said in his comments earlier, but after that i did one more step thanks to polish guide on steam CSM 2015 page. After I finshed patching, i put on comp mode for both ghg.exe and gearhead.exe on xp sp3, then I made desktop shortcut for ghg.exe. For the final step i added two commands at the end of shortcut directons. It looked something like that "C:\Program Files (x86)\HeadGames\Gearhead Garage\ghg.exe" -MustBeHere -nosound . After some testing I droped to nosound command and everything works fine and dandy here (1h playthrough so far, no crashes, no freezes)
pkkilleru @Ostrovercove I got it running with the below method on Windows 10 x64 laptop with an Intel HD 4000 video card.
Please make sure you apply every individual patch one by one through the GHG patching tool. For me the game is very stable comparing with what it does when the original d3d.vd file is used...
I do not have any other method to fix it, sorry...
Ostrovercove pkkilleru im on window 10 64 bits. wracking my brain to make it work too. if you have any other tricks can you poke em my way ? that one doesnt work.
pkkilleru In addition to my comment below, you will set compatibility mode for ghg.exe to Windows XP (SP2) and tick the box for "Run as administrator"
pkkilleru I have found a way to get Gearhead Garage to work on Windows 10:
1. Install normally from the ISO and apply all patches from gearheadgarage(com)
2. Get the portable version of Nelson Piquet's Grand Prix (game) from myabandonware(com)
3. Replace the file called d3d.vd from the Data folder of Gearhead Garage with the same file from Nelson Piquet's Grand Prix
GHG should not crash anymore and you can enjoy it

It would be really awesome to get this, the gaming experience is incredible.
gamesfreak64 a 1:1 remake? that would be very cool, but then they should be careful it wont turn out like a Car Mechanic Simulator 2015 clone.
GHG had old cars and the 3d engine might not been the best there was around but that game had his own charm, i think that if they remake it chances will be very big they will be tempted to use nowadays 3d engine which will result in those clean 3d cars that are seen in every 3d car mechanic game/ program/application and thus spoiling the good old look the orginal GHG had.
So if possible i think a fix of the old game would give us the best match (they also seem to blame dx7 for most off it)
On win XP you would have a change to play it but the car models would look very bad, almost like pixel cars.
Its like Gorky17, the original graphics quality was only possible withc certain old GFX cards, so with the latest GPU wqe have to play the pixel version, but the game is still one of my favos and i still play it.

That gearhead garage would be great to have working on all windows.
I have the limited demo and played it on old windows.
On XP i had to use the dx7 which made the cars abit ugleir but it worked, on my win7 64bit it wont start, and the so called solutions dont work.
Be great if GearHead Garage be on GOG.

crash48 I recently tried to get it to run on Windows 7 and even on a Virtual Windows XP machine but failed miserably so far. I would love to be able to play it again... Maybe I'll just build a windows 98 machine for fun :D
