Below The Root
played this on apple 2e
The game was published by Windham Classics a division of Spinnaker Software. It was acquired by The learning Company who was then acquired by Mattel. If I've traced it correctly the rights to the game should be with Mattel.
My family all played Below the Root on Commodore 64. There were moments in the game that were great (spoilers):
*Flying (rather gliding) with a Shuba
*Pensing a rabbit
*What happened at the shack at the top of the tree
*Figuring out how to get in to the Temple
.....and so much more
I still have my old floppy around somewhere. I beat this game more than once as did at least one of my siblings. Loved this game so much and have been wanting to playing it, again, for years.
I just learned about this game today. Seems like a very special and unique game for its time, and my wife loved the books as a kid but never got to experience the game. Would love to see it in a form we could play.
I honestly don't think it'll be hard to obtain the rights to sell it here, as I don't think Windham Classics exists anymore. And seeing as the book it was based on (The game is actually a direct canon sequel, very rare for a book series to do) is long out of print so I doubt the writer (or her estate if she had passed) would complain.
Personally this game was a huge part of my childhood. It started so many things, such as multiple character selections which effected the entire gameplay encouraging multiple playthroughs. I hope for this AND Alice in Wonderland (Which ran on the same engine)
I played this game on my Tandy 1000 in my childhood, and really enjoyed it. I remember finishing it on my own with no help... what an accomplishment.
It'd be nice to see this get more traction, but I don't think it has the popularity required. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Here's the wiki page about the game: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Below_the_Root_(video_game)
I would love to see this. I played it long long ago, I forget what computer (Either an old apple, or a PC. I never had a Commodore 64). I'd love to see this on GoG.
Beat this once on a C-64 years ago. Amazing story, but I think I miss the music most of all. Sadly, no one I know has ever grunspreked or shubaed.
Been searching for this forever. I used to own it for my Commodore 64 back in the day. Really hope GOG is able to obtain it someday.
A very wonderful game with a very unique gameplay and story, especially at the time. Even though it has very simple pixel graphics, I consider it one of the classic gems of gaming. This would be great to have and play again.
This game was magical. There is no other way to put it.
If GOG decides to create a versin of this game, my one request would be that they try to emulate the Commodor 64 version of the game - the graphics were much better than the IBM version.
Special game. A true classic.
I never got to finish this game as a kid because a friend owned it. She accused me of only coming over to play the game, so I had to quit. Years later I found it on a Commodore 64 emulator, and have since beaten it multiple times. You can still play it that way. But it takes a bit of work to get running. I would much rather have a GOG version that didn't require the emulator.
I loved this game when it first came out. I played it on a PC Jr. Good times. I would love to play it again -- it is so, so opposite of today's "games".
