Barrow Hill: Curse of the Ancient Circle completed
Again, Steam tries to own every game.
I was surprised it is available on Steam before GOG. I just bought it!
This has just got to happen! I can't believe it isn't already available on GOG as it's a natural bed fellow of the Dark Fall series which is also heavily influenced by both Doctor Who and Sapphire And Steel.
Dark Fall 2 Light's Out is very reminiscent of the Doctor Who 'Horror Of Fang Rock' story from the Tom Baker era, while the train station and hotel setting of Dark Fall 1 and 3 is a direct copy of a set from a Sapphire And Steel story. Sapphire even describes their adversary as 'a darkness' so it could well have been the inspiration for the entire game series.
I agree with Azilut regarding the petrol station/cafe location being the one from the final Sapphire And Steel assignment. So much so that I keep expecting them to suddenly appear, a bit like that wretched bird that still makes me jump every time despite my replaying the game every couple of years or so - just long enough to forget most of the details of the puzzle solutions.
I'm actually due for a re-play so I suppose I'll have to go hunting for the installation disc again. Bummer. So come on GOG, make this the last time I have to go rummaging... pretty please?
Yes, Barrow Hill has a great atmosphere and really good real-world puzzles. They were challenging, but possible to think though. I got through the game without a walkthrough and it game me a nice sense of satisfaction. I've replayed it several times even though it wouldn't really qualify as a "replayable" game, but I enjoyed it enough that I wanted to experience it again. Really fun. Excellent point and click, for fans of the genre, like me!
One of my favourite point-and-click adventure games,. What really impressed me was that I could actually solve most of the puzzles just by thinking to myself, "what would I actually try to do in this situation?". This helps the setting to feel more organic, which in turn helped me immerse myself in the game - I was never dragged out of it by wondering "who set up this silly mirror-based locking mechanism anyway? Haven't they ever heard of keys?" Plus, it doesn't hurt that the story draws inspiration from two excellent British sci-fi series - Tom Baker-era Dr. Who, and Sapphire and Steel (the second one's just a guess, but the lonely gas station reminds me quite a bit of the one in S&S Assignment Six).
