I find that petition for GOG support on Linux! www.change.org/p/official-gog-com-support-heroic-games-launcher?redirect=false
Make GOG Galaxy work on Linux and support for the Steam Deck will be little to no effort. Many games in the catalogue are natively supporting Linux and also many gamers are switching to Linux as their main platform, and a great part thanks to the Steam Deck. Don't get lost! Would be a shame. Also Linux Support should be in your DNA since it is also DRM free... Think about it, an please don't only think about it ;)
+1
Steam Deck an good old games sounds like a natural fit. Make it so!
Whenever I was going to buy a game on Steam, or got a wishlist discount e-mail, I would always check to see if it was available for a comparable price on GOG. Now that I have a Steam Deck, it's the opposite: GOG wishlist discount e-mails now trigger me to check for the game on Steam. And I've bought it there every time.
Right now, it doesn't make sense to continue purchasing from GOG, given many of the typical use cases of the Steam Deck. Please consider porting Galaxy over to SteamOS so we can continue to support the GOG store without neutering our Steam Deck (or Linux in general) gaming experience.
It is so stupid of them not to make a native Linux based client. For me personally I will not buy anymore stuff from GOG. I mean I always loved the DRM free approach, but honestly it is a real pain to play my games on Steam Deck now. I do not want to fuzz around with other launchers like Heroic or Lutris or even install GOG Galaxy via Bottles...it is a pain, slow and lots of the time not even working withouth tweeking. I bought several games again on Steam only to have them integrated well and be playable from the start with much less hassle...I hope others will follow, for me personally that is the way to go. I will not spend my precious time on tinkering when I could be playing in my free time all along by just using my Steam versions of games. So bye bye GOG, sadly...
I'd love to see this happen, but I bet it won't. At least not for a WHILE. We can't even get them to make a GOG client for Linux! They'd have to do that, and then optimize the experience for their competitor's hardware!
Steam's hardware survey says Linux is only 1.23% of their users - not even beating Mac users at 1.74%
I don't think GOG will do anything of the sort until Linux is at about 5%
I mean, I hope they prove me wrong and make me eat my words but... I really think it's just not a priority for them.
talk about a missed opportunity. I mean gog did gog connect to work with steam, but no insight to be prepared for the steam deck? why would anyone continue to buy titles here instead of steam for the deck if they are a deck owner? Why shoot yourelf in the foot? Is it because some yahoo in management cant get out of their own way?
I definitely agree. GoG, you're going to be losing sales (from me as well) If you don't make it easy to have your games run on the Steam Deck. So far I've failed at running Gog games via the Heroic Launcher, and I'm seriously considering purchasing all my future titles on Steam now.
Yeah, nothing new to say, it's just kind of sad. I know of the marketshare percentage problems and stuff, but that doesn't change the fact that i've always tried to convince my peers to buy on gog if possible, but ever since i got my steam deck, and had my fair share of problems getting gog games with savegame sync to run on the deck in a way that isn't an absolute miserable user experience. I ended up re-buying a lot of games i already own on gog, and i think going forward, i will main steam again, both in my own purchasing habits and when it comes to recommending a store to friends.
Hi GoG,
Whenever there's a sale on both GoG and Steam I now favor Steam. That's just because it's a one click install with the Steam Deck.
It used to be the other way around. I would prefer GoG over Steam anytime, because of the no DRM policy.
Dear GOG - I love ya, but yes, do something to play nice with the Steam Deck; the Deck adds another reason sometimes to say "ah, I'll just buy it over there". Maybe that's not a great thing for the world - and yes, I can go to desktop mode and do tricks... but that barrier... will push more people to the deck.
If you just released some form of "bring your library onto the deck" this wouldn't happen.
Dos games should be easy to do
There won't be a Linux GoG client. The community has asked for a Linux client for years - but GoG is just silent about about.
Even with the Steam Deck (now released) the only statement is: "Install Windows on the Steam Deck to play GoG games."
Very sad... I have hundreds of games on GOG, but since I realized that there won't be any Linux support, I stopped buying on GoG. I would love to come back, because I love DRM free gaming, though
Think about people who are just now getting into PC gaming having no other choice than to ONLY buy on Steam. Console exclusive gamers will dip a toe into pc gaming due to the price point of the Deck. Also, those of us with large gog libraries will be forced to choose if we still want to purchase new releases on gog.. or perhaps to start buying for the platform that allows us to get the most out of our games if we want to play them portably..
Or heck, with Windows forcing the incredibly intrusive Windows 11 practically here, there may be a lot of people contemplating moving to Linux.. Seeing as how due to Wine/Proton, most windows games work in Linux now.
Gog could increase its customer base simply by positioning themselves as a digital distributor that offers DRM-Free games that can be enjoyed on more than just the Windows platform. Gog NEEDS a Linux Client that makes it easy to install non-native Linux games via WINE that also supports features they can get on other stores (cloud saves and the like).
Gog cannot force developers to make Linux versions of their games, so why not integrate Wine into a native Linux launcher? That paired with Linux versions of dosbox and SCUMMVM should expand your platform's viability and increase your user base in one fell swoop.
Linux is the future of PC gaming like it or not. The Deck will see to that.. It's just the first step. Steam OS will suddenly be on everyone's radar as their next OS of choice once they see what is possible.
