Mafia Classic

The original Mafia is a masterpiece easy to overlook because of its GTA/Godfather looks. It's actually a well-structured adventure in a realistic pre-WWII city with an original and gripping story right from the start up until the very end of the credits. The cars are fun to drive (even the bad ones), the action segments are varied and quite challenging (no regenerative health for instance), and managing when to follow traffic regulations and when to break the law is much more fun than crashing into pedestrians. On top of that, beating the game unlocks an insanely-difficult free-roaming mission mode. Too many great moments to list here. The problem with the GOG version is that it's not the original Mafia. As of this writing. all licensed music has been stripped from the game. This means driving around will be lacking a good chunk of its original atmosphere, and the beautifully shocking lyrics from the credits (which were tied perfectly with the story) are now completely missing. It's still a great game despite this issue, but you're going to miss out on a major part of the experience. I highly recommend paying the extra money to hunt down a physical copy, but if you're on a budget you may want to give this version a try as the quality of gameplay is still unmatched by its rivals and even its sequels.

One of the greatest story telling pieces ever created, in any medium, period. The atmosphere, the cars, the guns, the open world, the map, the missions: Everything was way ahead of its time. The storytelling alone deserves plaudits far beyond any the entire GTA franchise is worth. This game eased me into adulthood. The narrative, the characters, the quests, the stories are worth Hollywood's holy trinity of awards. By the end of this game, you will so solidly be hooked that you will weep with grief at the end and you will weep at what they've done to the franchise after this. Buy it. It is genuinely one of the greatest games of all times, ever.

My first contact with this game was a demo version which was on a CD Released by a well-known German games magazine! I played through it over 10 times! When I bought it shortly after, I played through the game three times, one playthrough after another! That is how much I loved and still love this game. Fun fact: I bought me a DVD drive for the soul purpose of playing through it again, about a month ago. It makes me really happy to see this game re-released, on GOG especially. I highly recommend everyone to grab this fine piece of gaming history. It has one of the best storylines in a shooter. It is like playing a spinoff movie of the Godfather movies. Sure it has dated controls and dated graphics...but no big problem if you are keen enough to mod this game a little. Especially the characters are pretty memorable, when you get to know them over time. And by time I mean "quite some" for a shooter. If you go fast you might still atleast have about 15 hours of gameplay, which by todays standards is a lot for a shooter. It is a true gem which was really underappreciated and forgotten by most throughout time and even back then. It is just a pity, that the iconic soundtrack is missing, but I am sure, that some modders, might be able to fix this problem pretty quickly! To me this is a "Must-Buy" for everyone!
