Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
While I love this title I have to give it one star as the developer seem to have stopped supporting this title on GOG. GOG version is three versions behind the Steam version and hasn't been updated since November.
Lovely game, great humor - at least from my perspective - don't buy it here. This game has not received the love and support it has on Steam. It's been over half a year since the DLC came out on steam and it's still nowhere to be seen on here. The game is also behind patch-wise. At the moment of writing the game seems to have been abandoned on GOG. Great game, just don't do the mistake I and others have done and buy it on here. The devs are a small team and GOG is most likely not on their radar any more. Frankly, I wish devs that have no interest in supporting their games on here would just stop releasing them here. It would be more honest then what we usually get.
What if you tried to make a serious game - with puzzles, challenging combat, narrative choices - but also tried to make every part of it worthy of a smile, if not an outright laugh? What if your character looked like he'd seen the Monty Python funny walk skit too many times? What if every item description, combat move, and enemy to fight felt like it was a pun, or a pop culture reference, or just silly? What if you really had to work at balancing your ridiculous resources and managing your fights to keep your character alive?
West of Loathing is what you'd come up with - at least, it's what these guys came up with, and it does all of that really well. It's more than an lame excuse to throw puns around - it's a fun and challenging game framework for throwing puns around.
Take your time while you play to read everything - and yes, there's a lot of reading. For some people, that may be the only drawback. And if you're like me you'll probably will miss half the jokes, just because there are so many targeting radically different groups of interests. But the gameplay is entertaining enough to be a decent game even without the humor, so if something happens and you think you just missed a good joke, just keep playing - you'll find something else to make you smile around the next corner.
(Review blatantly copy/pasted from steam.)
- The graphics are incredibly minimalistic.
- There's so much reading it's basically a text adventure.
- The battle system can be broken pretty much immediately and you will face nary a challenge in the whole game.
And you know what? None of that crap matters. Rarely has a game made me this consistently smile all the way through. The writing is hilarious and despite dipping into toilet humor here and there it never feels cheap or mean spirited. The characters are charming and memroable. Doc Alice is maybe the most interesting companion i've had since Planescape Torment. There is enough content here to last you at least two playthroughs. So much care went into the little details like the fact that "Sarsaparilla" is misspelled differently every time you pick up a new bottle.
West of Loathing is a gem. It's a treat. It's all the reasons for me why videogames are worth playing.
