Wasted potential: the game

Let me start this review by saying the original Vertical Drop Heroes is my favorite flash game. It makes sense to think that an HD version would be my favorite game. But no. It's not. It's mediocre or worst, and I'm only givng it 3 stars because it has local co-op, otherwise it'd be getting a two. It's sad to write this review. I'm a huge fan of nerdook's work. It's probably not fair to review a game comparing it to an earlier free version of it, so I'll get that part out first. In the original game you controlled a hero with no skills, that could become different characters by freeing them from cages (rogue/wizard/berserker/etc.). Each character had unique skills. But, the progression system was a highlight. You could unlock perks for each character, so, even though you could play a fire wizard or an ice wizard (which played very differently), the "wizard" class was still well defined and different from the other classes. In the HD version, you start as a "randomly generated" hero, and only play as that one fellow. All heroes have access to the different weapons and skills, and after 2 or 3 plays, they start feeling "all the same" and get bland real fast. The progression comes from unlocking different weapons and skills, that barely affect the game. Except for skills like "double jump", all of them make no difference. Weapons suffer the same fate, besides bows and similar weapons, they make no difference on how you play. The game discarded design for randomness thinking it'd mean replayabilty, and sadly it does not. If you enjoy all these "rogue-lite" games indie devs are shitting out nowadays, you might find it interesting. Otherwise, play the free original one, save yourself some money, and have a good fun time.

It makes a better browser game

This game is a port of an online game of the same name. It just stands alone on a PC this time, rather than having to make it work in a browser window. It isn't the worst I've seen, but that doesn't mean it's good. It fails to turn the stomach, but that doesn't make it nutritious. It's worth it to see once for a few levels, but there is very little substance to the experience. If you enjoy watching it played, you will likely enjoy actually playing it, but otherwise skip it. It isn't worth your time. Final Word: YouTube the gameplay.

disappointing

was looking for a co-op rogue legacy. this game has the right idea but feels poorly executed. music was inconsistent and had bad looping. graphics and gameplay are no better than your typical flash game. the health bars are all the same colour, friend or foe, which can be confusing. i can't recommend this game to anyone and i wish i hadn't bought it.

Ironically named...

I'm sorry but no. This game feels like it should be on mobile, not PC. For a game called "Vertical Drop Heroes HD" it has very little depth to it, ironically. You run around spamming your attack button at the dumb-as-dirt enemies, all while trying to fall down to the bottom, collecting coins along the way, to buy upgrades. You fight a boss at the bottom, he is big and dumb as dirt; just spam your abilities. The enemies are boring and same-ey, the dungeons are boring and same-ey, the gameplay is boring a same-ey. Noticing a pattern? There are far better rogue-lite games with local co-op then this one. And around this price-point. Try "Zombie Party", A Wizard's Lizard", or "Hammerwatch" instead of this. The icing on the cake: No sound or music lvls; just on/off. Just let the utter laziness displayed sink in. Seriously, who does something like that? It is beyond Annoying. It is beyond Very Annoying, it is downright Unacceptable.

The perfect LAN party game is born!

I never played on the original VDH. This was the first time I ever heard about it. This was the game I registered for! The game has similar hero-system like the Rogue Legacy (random selection between three random heros). The difference is in the balance between the good and bad options. The traits is always good, but the weapons "effectiveness" cost less or more from your other stats. The stages are random generated. Random placed, and event-spawned monsters together can make large number of enemy on screen... sometimes hard to survive these hordes. The title says: LAN party. Yes, this game is an awesome party game. Can be played on one computer split screen mod, and has a working online mod too. It has no serverbrowser, nor hard-to-configure server, only uses IP. This game brings back the old glorious days of the fun party playing.
