Description
In UNDERTALE you play as a human child who falls underground into the world of monsters. Now you must find your way out... or stay trapped forever.

Welcome to UNDERTALE, an RPG game where you don't have to kill anyone. Each enemy can be "defeated" nonviolently. Dance with a slime. Pet a dog. Whisper your favorite secret to a knight.
Or, ignore this choice and rain destruction upon your foes.
But your journey will take determination. Each adversary has unique bullet patterns that you must dodge as well (don't worry, it's not that hard).
  • Killing is unnecessary: negotiate out of danger using the unique battle system.
  • Time your attacks for extra damage, then dodge enemy attacks in a style reminiscent of top-down shooters.
  • Soulful, character-rich story with an emphasis on humor.
  • Created mostly by one person.
  • Become friends with all of the bosses!
  • At least 5 dogs.

Defying expectations

Gameplay-wise, Undertale is mostly a mishmash between jrpg and bullet hell, except for the bits which aren't. Storyline is about a little kid who got lost in a land of monsters, except for when it isn't and then it's not really. Above all, Undertale is a game entirely focused on doing the opposite of what you expect it to do, and when you shift your expectations in order to accommodate for this, it then does the opposite of the opposite you expected. It's a game with a neat ending which then continues when you relaunch it. It's a game with fantastic writing, amazing music and some of the most amazing characters I've ever seen in videogames. It's... Unique, weird and confusing. It's also not a great game, but it's so bizarre that at this point, I don't even care. If you consider videogames an experience and want to focus on story - this one is a must as I can guarantee you've never experienced anything like it. If you play videogames primarily for gameplay... Perhaps skip this one. Oh, and I mean it - after you finish, launch the game again, otherwise you'll miss like half the experience.

Not for everyone, but still awesome

Its important to play this game disregarding all the hype around it. As amazing this game is it is one of those unusual games that not everyone can fully enjoy. The gameplay is an interesting mixture of Shin Megami Tensei diplomacy and classic bullet hell when dodging enemy attacks. For those worried the game is overwhelming like other bullet hell games don't worry, the game is much more merciful and fair than something like Touhou. To be honest the game feels more like a point and click adventure game than a JRPG, the main thing you do in and out of battle is take in the atmosphere, experience the excellent story, and enjoy the incredibly clever writing. Most of the time battles feel more like puzzles than actual fights, though this is far from a bad thing if you are looking for Earthbound type battles this isn't your game. The game's battle system is definitely the most divisive thing in the game, its solid and creative but also very hit or miss among people. In the end though, the main reason to play this game is for the characters and story. Undertale is filled to the brim with satire on game tropes, references, and one of the best cast of characters ever to grace media let alone a video game. The game is also the perfect length for replaying, long enough to fit in a great story and side quests but short enough to make you feel "Ah that was fun... Lets do it again!". Indeed many memorable moments in the game are only gotten by playing it through in different ways. Is Undertale overrated? Yes, but seeing what it does right its the good kind of overrated. A game that is overhyped that lives up to most of the hype.

Amazing

I'm a huge fan of games with a good sense of humour but adding a good amount of serious moments, memorable and likable characters and making it feel like you yourself are living in the game making it more personal. Undertale is right up there with Earthbound and Persona 4 as one of my favourite RPGs ever and I think everyone should at least try it once. One last thing, the soundtrack is fantastic so give it a listen if you get the chance.

Friendship. Friendship?

Undertale is a game that mixes jRPG, shoot 'em up/bullet hell, visual novel and adventure game elements into one weird and exciting package of fun, friendship and death (in quantities chosen by the player from 0 to EVERYONE). It's a game about friendship and game about hard choices done in a cute and entertaining way. The game presents itself almost like a window to a different world filled with weird monsters, and you roleplay your way through it. You can be just a visiting adventurer who does whatever fits the moment. Someone who befriends everyone they meet. Or KILL EVERYONE. Oh and game will remember your choices even if you reload or quit. It's not without it's issues. Some jokes aren't let go when they should be. At some points game becomes more moralizing and treating you like a child, although, thankfully, most often it doesn't. And some mechanics and moments just feel a bit off or at least not as good as everything else. But those things stick out just because how much joy you get from the game, how often you smile and laugh. Unless, of course, you want to KILL EVERYONE. (And here I need to also acknowledge the game's immense popularity and genuinely creepy fandom. It's not "the bestest game ever", no game is, but it's good so just expect it to be what it is. And don't search internet for a lot of fan Undertale-related stuff if you value your psyche. ) Personally, I loved Undertale a lot. I laughed a lot, smiled a lot, cringed a little, had a great time and genuinely felt sad to finally finish it. It's a great virtual world to visit.

Great Experience and Story

While gameplay wise it is a pretty standard fair (jRPG mixed with Bullet Hell Shooter) it's the story and overall atmosphere of the game that makes it worth checking. Had a blast when i played this game and did 3 runs of it. I own it on Steam but i am thinking on buying it second time and replaying it yet again to discover the stuff i didn't know earlier about. Pro Tip: Just ignore the fanbase and haters cause both sides can ruin the experience greatly.
