Description
A so-called "Rhythm RPG", packing in a fully-fledged story mode with a colorful cast of musically-empowered heroes and villains, The Metronomicon sees you take control a party of eight newly graduated masters of the “rhythmic combat arts” to wage musical warfare against a multitude of dance-mongering fiends. By switching between four concurrent hero-controlled tracks on-the-fly, you’ll select and activate a wide array of abilities and spells, buffs and nukes, with your performance and timing all-important in ensuring the effectiveness of your moves.

In the RPG spirit, you’ll need to improve your characters’ stats, hunt down powerful equipment, and combine a multitude of newly-learned abilities – switching between tanking, healing, buffing, and damage-dealing classes as required in real time.

The Metronomicon features a fantastic, fully-licensed soundtrack featuring some of the hottest electronic, synthwave, chiptune and indie artists, including an exclusive track from Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence, an unreleased track from Shiny Toy Guns, along with tracks from YACHT, Perturbator, J-Punch, Dj CUTMAN, and many, many more. As much a soundscape as it is a soundtrack, the music behind The Metronomicon is set to be every bit as varied and exciting as the gameplay itself.
  • Unique Rhythm RPG – slay fearsome beasts to an even fiercer beat
  • An epic quest - A wide range of characters, with locations ranging from a medieval party yacht to a rockstar-haunted castle – and many more!
  • A soundtrack like no other – a powerful, ear-shattering mix of electronic and indie music featuring renowned artists such as Jimmy Urine of Mindless Self Indulgence
  • Progress - improve your characters’ stats, hunt down powerful equipment, and combine a multitude of newly-learned abilities – switching between tanking, healing, buffing, and damage-dealing classes
  • Replayability – freeplay mode, ranked side quests, and a devilish arena enable you to revisit the game’s awesome soundtrack at your own pace, with different gameplay options and character choices available

Wonderful Rhythm Game

This game is an interesting mix between an RPG and a Dance Dance Revolution clone in a good way. Essentially you move between your characters using the Shift keys and the arrow keys or WASD to hit the notes. It sounds hectic at first but it's amazingly fluid after only a few songs. This leads to the weakest portion of the game, the songs. Now I am in no way saying the songs are bad, because they aren't, they're actually fantastic, however there are very few, if any songs, I'd venture to say the average people would recognize immediately. With that in mind every single song is catchy and you'll be humming along faster than you can imagine. The way combat works is you hit notes in order to "cast" the attack, however you set attacks up in that the longer you keep a chain of notes going the actual attack will change. Say your "Exploder", the mage class, has a fire ball in their 1 position, that means in about 4-7 notes you'll cast a fire ball once you mess up for change to a different character, however if you have a water blast in the 2 position if you hit the 4-7 notes for the fire ball and continue to hit the right notes you'll end up casting the water blast. In addition to this variance in casting there is also a power difference increasing by each position. An attack in the 2 position will be stronger than an attack in 1 position. The game also boasts a variety of combat types, ranging from simple "beat the song for a high score" mode to a "survive a boss that has a continuious attack" to "Kill X amount of enemies". This leads you to approach each objective differently, like in the high score mode you just wanna hit as many notes as possible while healing every now and then while in the kill mode you wanna pay attention to the enemy's monster type, each of which as a specific weakness. TL;DR: A great game with a rather unknown song base that grows on you over time and will keep you entertained for hours assuming you like rhythm games.

Just a generic rhythm game

Crypt of the Necrodancer managed to make a really interesting blend of rhythm game and roguelike, with both aspects of the game being truely merged and equally important. In contrast, The Metronomicon is a generic rhythm game that happens to show pictures of some incredibly cliched characters while you're playing. The RPG aspects are effectively meaningless, with just the odd stat change that has no noticable effect on the actual gameplay. This is not helped by the interface. You're supposed to try to match elements in attack and defence to increase "damage", but the icons are both tiny to the point of unreadability and on the opposite side of the screen from the rhythm arrows you need to focus on. On anything other than the easiest songs, even looking at your characters or the monsters is hardly possible, making the entire visual theme completely pointless. As for the music, that's always going to be more a matter of personal preference, but for the most part it's just bland and instantly forgetable. There are plenty of classic tunes around that are clearly well written and memorable even if you don't like their genre, but I wouldn't recognise a single tune from this game if I heard it elsewhere. Overall, it's a big disappointment. A rhythm-RPG with the latter a tacked-on gimmick and the former just boring and generic. There's really nothing to recommend here.

RHYTHM IS A DANCER

The Metronomicon is a rhythm game unlike any other - you control a party of four characters, each with their own abilities, and you fight a procession of dancing monsters by hitting a sequence of notes correctly to activate said abilities. The songs are excellent and you'll find yourself looking up the songs and artists when you're not playing. The only downside I can find is that there's currently no way to buy the soundtrack, except at that lesser digital distribution site. Come on, Puuba, get on this, I WANT THESE TUNES! The writing is extremely silly, but how else could it be when the game has you fighting dancing bears at a rave? Also, the game works with a wide variety of controllers, including my USB Xbox 360 Rock Band guitar controller, and I've heard it will work with dance pad controllers - the buttons are easily customizable as well. Don't go into it expecting the deepest RPG ever - the RPG mechanics exist to keep you coming back, defeating stronger enemies and bosses, and unlocking achievements. As such, they do a splendid job. Easily one of my favorite games of the year, The Metronomicon is a wonderful surprise, and an excellent addition to any rhythm gamer's library.

Great game, with room for improvement

Not a perfect game, hopefully if a sequel is ever made they will improve upon it, the music is good, great to listen to and importantly easy to here the beat. The game play is what you'd expect from a dance pad game on a keyboard, with keyboard controls and the switching between characters is a cool gameplay element which is necessary although even more fun with someone else playing. If they did make a sequel I'd love some clearer visual feedback that I've actually hit the notes as when playing with a keyboard there isn't that much feedback on whether or not I hit the notes, also it would be nice to be able to create my own charts with my own songs.

Dance Dance Revolution X Mortal Kombat

A uniquely humorous dance-fighting game.
