Description
Modern society owes much to a mystical technology known as “orbal energy.” Fifty years ago, during what’s come to be known as the “Orbal Revolution,” the invention of this technology and the “orbments” developed from it led to a period of rapid human advancement, birthing innovations of all shapes and sizes -- not the least of which was the airliner, or “orbalship” industry. Although the positive impact of this revolution is obvious, every coin has a flipside; for every beneficial device developed with these new materials, so too were advanced weapons and other implements of war. Thus, the land became mired with turmoil, and remains in such a state even now.

Enter, the bracers: an organization established to serve as police and intermediaries alike, holding above all else the peace and safety of the lands under their jurisdiction. Whenever a citizen is in need of assistance, he or she may place a request at the local Bracer Guild -- and be it monster extermination, crime prevention or even peace talks among warring nations, the bracers will do whatever they can to resolve the matter cleanly and efficiently.

Some matters require a gentler touch than others, however. When an orbalship transporting a legendary "S-rank" bracer named Cassius Bright suddenly goes missing, said bracer's daughter, Estelle, and adoptive son, Joshua, must join forces in search of him across the entire Kingdom of Liberl.

And what they find along the way could change both of their lives forever...

Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history. Introducing people, places, ideas, events and lore that rival in complexity those of even the most highly-regarded fantasy epics in literature, the care and attention given to each and every NPC, location and historical in-game event is what sets The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky apart from its contemporaries.

Come join Estelle, Joshua, Scherazard, Olivier and the rest of the cast as they uncover the secret underbelly of Liberl in their first 50+ hour masterpiece, and see what Japanese gamers have been raving about for over ten years.
  • Classic JRPG with over 50 hours of gameplay, strategic turn-based combat, and countless side-quests.
  • A vast world where every NPC has a name and personality, every town has its own unique politics and economic concerns, and no detail is ever trivial.
  • Widescreen and USB gamepad support, selectable difficulty and new game+ features.

JRPG Goodness that is surprisingly deep

Trails is a game a JRPG-lover will either find boring or fall in unconditional love with. On the surface, it's nothing special. The graphics are colorful, but not top-of-the-bill. The combat system is initially bare-bones until you get more spells and moves, though offers some nice strategical challenge later on. The story takes a while to get going and remains a bit slow until near the end of the second chapter where things start building up until the fast-paced final chapter. What makes Trails special is its meticulous attention to detail regarding every part of its game world. It's the epitome of world-building. Every NPC in every town has a name and a personality. Their dialogue changes after every major plot event and while playing through a chapter, you can find several mini-stories going on on the side. Every town has a history and economy there's just tons of little tidbits to find. Even every treasure chest is unique when you check its contents twice. If you take the time to truly explore and discover the game world, you'll probably grow to love this game to death and will be in physical need of its sequel. (which comes out later this year and was originally supposed to be part of this game) If you value instant gratification then this game is not for you. If you like JRPG's and aren't afraid to spend your time talking to every NPC and exploring a living, breathing game world with characters who'll almost certainly grow on you, get this game RIGHT NOW!

One of the greatest J-RPGs now on GOG

Trails in the Sky FC is the first part of Legend of Heroes 6 trilogy and features a great (and long) story slowly developed through the game, dosing serious moments and humour. Trails in the Sky features an major evolution in every aspect (dialogues, character construction, gameplay), comparing to the previous Gagharv games. The characters construction is one of the strenghts of the game, that features several main characters, all with their strong personalities. The gameplay is good, you can rotate the camera freely on the major part of the time and the combat is interesting, mixing a turn-based system with strategy-RPGs features. On the graphics side, the art is greatly done by Falcom, as in every game of the company. Characters portraits show their emotions on the dialogues (happiness, boredom, ...), contributing to the characterization. Music too is good, and although I would like to hear some more musics featured, the ones played are generally good. Also, XSEED's efforts on the localization shall be mentioned, as this version has widescreen support, on the contrary of the original PC version, has the voice acting featured on the PSP version, along with the retry feature, that lowers the difficulty of a lost battle and gives the player a immediate battle-retry option (for all this enhancements, praise Sara, XSEED's one person development area). Althrough I disabled the retry feature, because I like difficulty, some people might like it.

It's about the journey...

This is more than a JRPG. It is a JRPG that has been lovingly polished, perfected, and carefully localized for your enjoyment. It is not about the battle system or awesome cutscenes. Instead, it is about a well developed lengthy story of two young bracers and their journey across an entire continent as they discover the lands and people for the first time. If you relax and enjoy it as the extended holiday that it is, there is much to enjoy here.

Fun JRPG

I played this a few years ago on PSP and really enjoyed it. I liked the tactics based combat and the orb skill system. You really can't grind as your exp. diminishes against certain monsters as your level increases. There are no random encounters which I like but exploring dungeons can still be a slough as you can't just get around some monsters and tactics combat takes time even on easy monsters. One thing, get the Eagle Eye orb in the last city. It's in the sewer dungeon. It makes you invisible and I never would have finished the very final dungeon- too many floors, too many monsters- without it. The final boss I had a great- just-barely-beat-it-but-did on-the-first-try moment. If you can stand JRPG's at all the story isn't bad and by the end cut scene I was wishing I could start the next installment right away.

One of the best JRPG

I played this game a long long time ago. In a language that much better than my English. The Turn-based combat system, 2D graphical, linear story, very restricted playing ways, a very commonly seen story line. Well those character portraits is cute and music is quite good. But from a Gaming view it seems to be very mediocre in most of aspect. But you know the best always surprise you in the most unsurprising aspect. I cant told you how surprising this game is. But when i first playing this game i just keep playing it day and night. Warning this game has a great chance letting you addicted to the world of classical JRPG!
