Description
Take Hugo through an animated "classic" style adventure, solving puzzles, finding hidden objects and outwitting the maniac hosts of the haunted house to rescue Hugo's sweetheart Penelope. Use the intuitive point & click mouse interface to move around and get Hugo to do your bidding. Just look at what's in store: a vicious dog, a mad professor, hidden passages, vampire bats and much more, all in a gloriously colorful animated cartoon style. And that's just the first game! In games two and three, take part in a huge mystery whodunit (with a few surprise twists and plenty of red-herrings) in an English country cottage and race to save Penelope's life after she is bitten by a vicious tree spider in an Amazonian jungle adventure.
  • Includes all three games: Hugo's House of Horrors, Hugo II: Whodunit? and Hugo III: Jungle of Doom!
  • Gather clues, solve mysteries, and rescue your sweetheart, Penelope, in this classic parser-based adventure game.
  • Features an intuitive point & click mouse interface in addition to the command line interface of the original version.

Trip down memory lane, if little else

The Hugo games are adventure game classics, no doubt. I certainly have a nostalgic soft-spot for them, and if you're like me you may find value in purchasing this set. I can't recommend it for anyone else, unfortunately. The game design doesn't really hold up too well nearly 25 years later. The games are often unfair and the puzzles are often obtusely designed and don't feel particularly fun to solve. If it goes on sale, maybe check it out as a curiosity, but for six bucks? Can't say I recommend it.

No Nightmare 3-D?

I played all 3 of these games when I was younger and had a huge impact on me as a kid. The game that I was hoping to see here was the FPS variation of the first game called Nightmare 3-D where you play as Hugo trying to rescue Penelope from a big House of Horrors theme like the first game has. While these 3 games are classics, I would love to see Nightmare 3-D starring Hugo and Penelope on here as well! I highly recommend looking into it if you haven't heard of it! 5/5 Stars for all titles!

I grew up playing these games...

They're...not very good. Just being straight up with you. They're archaic, brutal adventure games with text input, lacking the polish of similar early Sierra games. Do they hold a special place in my heart? Hell yes. When I was a kid I was enamored with Hugo because I didn't have a computer at the time. These kinds of games were totally foreign to me, and exciting, and the only way I could play them was going to my neighbor's house across the street. Would I recommend them to someone now? Of course not! Come on, people. If you're going to recommend an old school text-based adventure game, recommend Space Quest, Police Quest, Kings Quest, Quest For Glory, Leisure Suit Larry, etc. instead. Don't let the nostalgia blind you into thinking these are great games.

Those who can't play Hugo 2 or 3.

As people may have noticed when hitting the play button for Hugo, it launches the first game. There is no pop-up that allows you to choose your executables. To play Hugo 2 or 3 Follow steps below. 1 - Click on The Hugo Trilogy in your GOG installed Library. 2 - At the top of the GOG client, you will see [Overview, My Progress, Extras] [Play] [More] 3 - Click on [More] 4 - Hover over [Additional executables >] 5 - Select Hugo 2 or 3 or the hint booklets. Enjoy. Games are a classic, used to play these back in the 90's, they are a lot shorter than I remembered lol.

Simple, but fun.

While they're very simple in terms of graphics and gameplay, these games have a charm of their own. I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for something challenging. I'd say even a kid has a good chance of beating these games. But if you want a light experience or want to show kids what classic adventure gaming was like without giving them something impossible to solve, I'd say go ahead and buy this.
