I've played card games like this before but I don't understand anything to do with what is goin on with this game. The tutorial just says click this do that without understanding what the jargon means or what the values diplayed means or what effects what. It's very frustrating and just has me yelling WTF at my monitor alot. I got the achievements but just by fluke and who knows. It's obviously not ready for prime time so I hope things get better once a few patches and more instructions on the gamelplay are published. I pre-ordered this so I do want to like and enjoy it. It looked relaxing and strategic at the same time from the previews but I didn't get that feeling on first play. Sad that i didn't know to upgrade this or that before winning against one of the freaks and loosing the ability to get it forever thus making my first save useless and now I just have to start over again. very confusing.
I spent almost 24 hours in this game, completed all main as well as side quests and made it to the final. Yet I got stuck. Queen Victoria turned out to be a unimpressible cow. Who would have thought?
Probably I trained wrong artists or should have chosen better traits. I don't know. And this is exactly my main issue with this game. It's not very player-friendly. The tutotial is brief and doesn't explain to you mechanics that much.
The Amazing American Circus is also very random so you can't be sure if you have good hand or not. But I guess it's pretty standard for card games.
Overall I liked the games's atmosphere and tone. Maybe because I'm a big fan of steampunk and Edwardian era. But if you are indefferent to those themes and circus, you may safely skip this one.
I finished the game in about 20 hours.
The theme and atmosphere in the game is really great and unique.
The game is very strategic and there are many different types of characters to recruit so u can play around with the cards and try different things.
I hope there will be a "The Amazing American Circus 2"
A rarely seen "golden age of circus" (ie. industrial age/late 19th cen) Americana theme that doesn't go steampunk or is particularly harsh/satirical on it.
It's kind of replaceable but they really did try to embrace it and make it atmospheric.
The setting dressing is probably the best part of the game by far.
Gameplay is standardish deckbuilder roguelike like Slay the Spire.
But despite it being pretty standard, even with the tutorial it can get really confusing due to its use of different terms that are not intuitive at all.
And for some reason, its quick right click inspect only explains SOME of the terms.
So if you are going to play this game - PLEASE copy down this quick guide and keep it at hand until you are very familiar with them:
focus - player hp
impress - player damage
vitality - player mana (cost)
stash - duration/stack
ignore - shield
boredom - enemy hp
sneer - enemy damage
pantomime - player reflect
scrap - remove(d) card from deck
max hand size is 10
Balance is pretty bad - there are reusable cards that give you mana AND draw cards. Most attacks deal ~4 damage per mana to ~10 with some setup. Ring of Fire deals 20 for 1 mana. Sure you need to flip it to use it again, but there's a card that can flip all cards for 1 mana.
It kinda tries to balance that by having many unique heroes, a lot having a few broken cards each. Too bad you can have multiple copies of a card or even hero.
Then you find that +dam doesn't increase the damage. It increases the damage NUMBER. What's the difference? Well, if the card says deal 1 damage per hand in hand, +3 makes it 4 per card.
There's also various bugs such as game not loading correctly upon going back to main menu, needing a full restart. HP sometimes not displaying correctly after an attack. Glossary only for current members and not all seen.
Just a general lack of polish in many places.
Overall, only would recommend it for the setting. It's not a bad game, just not very good.
I hate the thrilling and exhausted feeling, very few action points without upgradable, and very lack of money, upgrades are unreasonable price up, the show income become fewer and fewer everytime, it's a dead cycle.
Very shitty mechanic design. Waste of money and the idea.
