Description
A Story About My Uncle is a first person platforming adventure game about a boy who searches for his lost uncle, and ends up in a world he couldn’t imagine existed. Take help of your uncle’s mysterious inventions that let you jump incredibly high and far through beautiful scenery, uncover clues to your uncle’s whereabouts, and meet fantastical creatures that will help you on your journey.

The movement in A Story About My Uncle is a crucial part of its core gameplay – focusing on swinging through the world with a grappling hook that gives the player a wonderful sense of speed and freedom. Soar through a game world with a unique art style and a mysterious story that unravels before you.
  • Grappling hook: An empowering mechanic that gives you a sensation of speed, flow and vertigo like you’ve never experienced before.
  • Explore the world: Visit a wonderful and exciting world - from paradisal caves, to lost civilizations and harsh, mystical landscapes.
  • Emphasis on story: While searching for your uncle you will meet creatures with stories and fates of their own. Take your time to explore the world to dig deeper into the narrative.
  • Non-violent: A Story About My Uncle is a First Person game, but it is driven by non-violent gameplay and a heavy emphasis on story and atmosphere.

Bought to Play with Kids - Not so great

I write this because to give a different perspective from the top reviews which did not match my experience. "This is boring doing the same thing over an over again." What started out well turned into that quote and end of play. I played for about two hours with my 6-year-old watching before she couldn't stand the constant reloads and frustrating retries. She did like the characters, the mysterious writing on the wall mystery, and the occasional glorious landings. I'm not the best platformer by any means but I'm not the worst. The jumping puzzles (i.e. the whole game so far) have no mechanic beyond checkpoints for recovering from mistakes. So you reload a lot. And do the same jumps a lot. And although I know exactly what I want to do, the grappling hook still has me bumping into things (--> fall + reload) a lot. I think the mechanics of the grappling hook need to be reconsidered. 4 stars for environment and beauty 3 stars for story / depth 2 stars for gameplay (considering this is 2014 and other jumping/acrobatic platformers have more fun / constructive ways of dealing with falling).

Fun mechanics with bad level design

So after reading most reviews here I just had to do one myself as I felt the most important point was being missed. Mechanics: Clearly the main attraction to this game, you have a grappling hook, a jump, a sprint, a long/high jump and finally rocket boots. They are well done and very fun to use, when the game gives you more open areas to explore. Unfortunately this pretty much never happens. You can jump 10 m ? Well here is some linear platforms that are 10m apart. You can now jump 15m ? Well here are some linear platforms that are 15m apart. ETC ETC ETC repeat ad nauseam. This is where the game clearly fails to understand the basic concept of FUN. It is not fun to go down a stupid single-solution puzzle-like path. It is fun to sometimes just have an open area to screw around in. Interesting story and characters: You are a father telling your daughter a story about your uncle when you were young. You start of by going to your missing scientist uncle's house where you find a tech-suit and a dimensional travel device through which you travel into a wonderous other world. It's not revolutionary but it has a nostalgic Julles Vernes style to it that is just so innocent and adorable I can't help but like it. Giving it a 4 as an encouragement because it is still fun and you can feel just how good it COULD have been.

Definitely worth the money!

A Story About My Uncle is a narrative focused, first person platforming adventure developed by Gone North Games and published by Coffee Stain Studios. The game has great sound and music design, surreal environments, jaw-dropping visuals, and much, much more. The game focuses on movement, speed, freedom, and light puzzle solving instead of violence. Movement is the core element of the game. With the help of your grappling hook, you feel so free and fast; flying without restrictions and at uncontrollable speeds. It feels so genuine and fluid that it immerses you into this unique world. WASD moves your character, shift to sprint, LMB to use your grappling hook, Space to jump, hold RMB to power jump, and Shift and hold RMB for powerleap. Almost every new platform is a checkpoint where it gives you a certain amount of charges for your grappling hook. And then you have to use your charges and your skills wisely to get to the next checkpoint. Also, Later in the game you get rocket boots to help you through the harder parts of the game.

A Game about Free, Unrestrained Movement

This is just really fantastic. It takes some abilities you have in a lot of games- grappling, jong jumping, and high jumping- and takes them to interesting, heightened new levels. For example, you'll do things like jump and fly towards a constellation of stones that are spinning and criss-crossing hundreds of feet away in midair before grappling and swinging through them in order to launch yourself half a mile to your final destination. It's really thrilling. There's also a really cool story to go along with it. I'd definitely recommend this.

Enjoyed every second of it

Spoiler Free -- I really liked this game, the gameplay is very fluid and moving feels precise. The atmosphere is created by a nice, but subtle soundtrack and the fantastic artstyle and graphics The character models are an exception, they only look "acceptable", definitely not on par with the rest of the game. But even though that point could be imporved upon, it didn't really hurt the immersion. As the game costs about 12$, i won't reduce my rating by 1 star for the character models. Playtime is fine (1playthrough with getting several collectables took me somewhere around 5h) And it was a fantastic experience. i really recommend getting this game!
