Description

Sheepo is a quirky metroidvania platformer featuring a shape-shifting sheep-thing, who must traverse an uncharted planet in order to collect samples of each living species for an intergalactic species database.

To capture a creature, Sheepo must find their unhatched egg, which happen to be highly guarded by that species "queen" (aka, a boss.) With each egg Sheepo collects, you then gain the ability to transform into that creature on contact, and explore the deeper reaches of the planets sprawling environment

Sheepo is a metroidvania, but contains no standard combat. Instead, gameplay is based on platforming and exploration. With the collection of each creature, Sheepo is able to dig, fly, and teleport across an interconnected series of landscapes, uncovering hidden shrines, old ruins, and strange characters.

  • Tight platforming with variety. Play as both Sheepo, and the variety of creatures you come in contact with. Gameplay remains fresh as you consistently learn the moves of each creature

  • Traverse a sprawling landscape with tons of hidden rooms and characters. Explore old mines, an abandoned mall, lush forests, the dingy sewer system, and much more.

  • 75+ hidden feathers to collect (the planets currency), which can be spent at the last remaining shop in DeadMall.

  • Non-linear gameplay. Sheepo begins somewhat linearly, but the map quickly opens up to allow you to make your own route.

Comfy

You play as an armless sheepthing named Sheepo, and you are tasked on your first day of work to save the species on the planet Cebron. I loved the peaceful, conservation narrative of this game. A welcomed change when we are saturated with games that force you to use violence to progress. I am in no way a big fan of platforming, but the platforming is very smooth, and I never felt frustrated with the game and enjoyed the exploration. To explore certain areas, you gain abilities from collecting eggs, gated by the area boss. This will allow you to transform for a short period of time into the creature when you are near them, and use that ability to access new locations . Some sections and bosses offered up a good challenge (only played on hard difficulty), and required multiple attempts. The currency of Cebron is feathers, mostly situated in harder to reach areas and secret areas, and are used for buying key items. If you collect some new feathers after a savepoint, and die before saving again you will lose those collected feathers, and will have go back and collect them again. The NPCs are eccentric and lovable, with bits of humour sprinkled throughout. The art direction was done well, as with the sound design. The starting song is really nice, with some other tracks being leftfield and memorable. The game had a good-length of gameplay for the mechanics, it took me about five and a half hours at 94% completion with all the health upgrades on the hard difficulty, but definitely could be completed much quicker if you dawdle less . A neat speedrun mode is also included, which includes a timer and effectively skips cutscenes. Also, there was linux support noted in the credits, yet there is no linux version available that I'm aware of at the time of writing this. Although the game worked fine with lutris/wine. Overall, this game with its novel pacifist approach, lovable characters, smooth platforming, is an enjoyable 3-10 hrs of your time. Very comfy.

Cute metroidvania

Pros: - looks nice, sounds nice - witty writing - fun exploration Cons: - too many boss fights where you have to wait for your turn to attack

Deserves more recognition

Well made game. Pleasant visuals and music, fluent controls and a decent variety of gameplay for it's relatively short length. Typical metroidvania mechanics. Very polished overall. It's obviously not the right thing if you're looking for a 50+ hours metroidvania with endless exploration and constant challenge, but great if you're fine with a shorter experience.

Challenging Platformer-Metroidvania

Sheepo is a challenging platformer-Metroidvania. The titular humanoid sheep is an explorer sent to gather eggs of the local species for an intergalactic species database. How physical objects are digitalised or preserved is not explained, while the eggs collected allow the protagonist to shape-shift into the respective species, but only when there is one nearby, which does not improve the consistency of the story. The controls are comfortable and rebindable, though the on-screen prompts still show the default configuration and wall-jumping is a bit odd. There is no direct combat outside of boss battles, only the environmental hazards, such as spikes and chainsaws. The boss battles are mostly focused on avoiding damage (bullet-hell-like) long enough for the bosses to die or be knocked out. The difficulty cannot be adjusted mid-game, and discovering that you woefully underprepared at the fifth boss is rather unpleasant. Fortunately, the save file can be easily edited with a text editor. There are several NPCs to talk to and some secrets to discover. The map is helpful overall - there are not many types of collectibles, only the health upgrades and the feathers. The latter are required to unlock the final areas and the ending. An optional NPC in the late-game gives a map showing the approximate location of the uncollected feathers. Another NPC can point in the general direction of the next egg to collect. Unfortunately, if the protagonist dies after collecting a feather and before reaching a save point, the feather will need to be collected again. Considering that they are usually located in hard-to-reach places, it is rather unpleasant. The visual design is expressive and readable. The soundtrack is nice and fitting. Overall, because I played Islets, the developer’s newer game, before Sheepo, the experience felt underwhelming. Islets is simply better in every aspect, but Sheepo can be enjoyable as well.

Platforming metroidvanis(ish)

This is a platformer first and foremost, jump aroung , unlock new shapeshifting skills to reach new places and challenge yourself to get 104% completion. Theres no combat, there are a few bosses, but all you do is jump and move around baiting them into hurting themselves, the game is not particularly hard, don't expect "path of pain" levels of platforming, but is challenging enough to keep you going. Very enjoyable experience, specially with the catchy music and the cozy graphics. A good title to decompress for a few hours.
