A neat mix
Shantae: Risky's Revenge continues the story of our half genie hero. It streamlines a lot of the mechanics the GBC original had and adds a few new ones. The directors cut for PC is a port of the DSi version and as such kept in the 16-bit style of that game. The game play is a mix between platforming, simple combat and exploration with a few puzzles mixed in. First and foremost you should think of this game more in the line of a Castlevania game with a bright color and not as classic platformer. Combat and exploring are often done by backtracking old areas after unlocking a new power. The platforming while tight and well executed is a means of traveling and not the main challenge of the game. It still does get fairly tricky at points but don't expect a super meta boy. The art is pretty and both the sprites and the hand drawn dialog pictures are gorgeous. The soundtrack( sadly not on GOG as far as I can tell) is wonerful and carries the theme of the game very well. I for one didn't ever feel sick of hearing it. A quick overview: Pros: - A satisfying mix of combat and platforming in the style of the SNES Metroidvanias - Tight controls ( pretty much a must for any game of this kind but I still wanted to list it) - Creative enemy and dungeon design - Wonderful 16-bit background and art combined with wonderful character portraits for the dialog boxes - Charming world and characters that blend well with the art and theme of the game - Wonderful Soundtrack Neutral: - A story that doesn't take itself to serious and aims to be more lighthearted and mixes in a lot of puns and jokes Cons: - A is cancel and B is accept in menus. This is annoying , but can be fixed. It is a bummer it is like this by default. - A bit on the shorter side with around 6h but on sale it is more then enough value for your money. Over all it is a very solid game with some minor issues. On sale more then worth the price.
