Description

THE NEXT GENERATION OF ARCADE SPACE SHOOTERS IS HERE

Redout: Space Assault puts you in control of a Super Orbital Recon Fighter during the 2395 Colonization of Mars: dive in the fastest, most epic and exciting arcade space battle you can experience. Outsmart, outmaneuver, overpower, outclass your opponents in lightning-fast, adrenaline-inducing single-player space combat.

You play as Leon Barret, ace fighter pilot of the Poseidon Security Forces. Here at Poseidon Corp., we are trying to pave the way for the colonization of Mars, as mankind is struggling for survival, split between a depleted hot Earth and a cold, claustrophobic Lunar colony. Your job is to maintain order by eradicating rebels and space pirates, facilitate our scientists' research while keeping them safe, and protect all our personnel from the numerous external threats.

Dive down into gigantic asteroid mining plants, shoot down Rebel drones and fighters, roll left and right avoiding enemy fire, unleash impossibly powerful missile volleys, but also race against stray pilots and space scavengers at breakneck speed for the sheer thrill of it.

By completing missions you will unlock Cards and Tokens to upgrade your fighter's Hull, Shields, Energy Weapons and Missiles until you are able to go up against massive Capital Ships and single-handedly shift the tide of the war.

In an interplanetary struggle where nobody is good or bad, you will experience Leon rising through the ranks, the meaning of “necessary evil”, the cost of integrity and ultimately, what it means to take a stand.

  • Music for your ears - An entirely dynamic soundtrack that will drop sicker and sicker beats the tougher the experience gets!

LOTS TO DO IN SPACE
Fight enemy Drones, Fighters and all sorts of enemy ships in rail shooter sections: avoid missiles and buckets of bullets while you take them down one by one.
Explore Iridium mines and abandoned space structures in search of hideouts, resources, and Rebels: enjoy the freedom of movement, cut your engine power to squeeze through narrow passages, but be careful not to scratch your paintwork.
Race through enemy installations, behind enemy lines, through gigantic space battles, or against space pirates for a quick buck.
Assault Capital Ships in specially designed missions that pit you against gigantic vessels: each with unique strengths, weaknesses and special attacks, each a turning point in the narrative of the game!

FAST-PACED SPACE ACTION
Redout: Space Assault comes with the Redout Adrenaline seal-of-quality. Every ship movement, from rolling to avoid missiles to pushing the limits of your ship via the enhanced boost, will make you feel like you are actually driving a space-capable fighter jet, on the brink of control. You will not need to instantly become a top gun in order to enjoy the game, but you will definitely need some skill if you want to achieve all bonus objectives and max out your fighter stats!

Not F-Zero, this is Starfox.

Considering this was originally a mobile, game my expectations were rock-bottom, but it's actually really good. Redout 2 is not an F-Zero-style hover car racer like the previous game, it's a Starfox-style rail shooter. The game is made for a twin-stick pad with left stick controlling movement, right stick controlling boost, break, and dodge rolls, and the triggers controlling guns and missiles. There are fully remappable keyboard controls, but I wouldn't recommend them. Strangely there are no mouse controls. Gameplay handles crisp and zippy. The campaign has many stages, and they're all very short, finished in 5 minutes or less. The game operates in four modes: 1) straight-up rail shooting where the screen scrolls down a predetermined path while you attempt to shoot down as many enemies as possible while avoiding projectiles and collisions. 2) Escape mode which is the same as the rail shooting parts except you aren't trying to shoot anything, just dodge while moving at max speed through boost rings. 3) Free-roam where you can freely rotate and explore. 4) Boss mode where you lock onto a boss enemy and freely pivot around it, dodging projectiles while zapping weak points. Stages can switch freely between the four modes, and sometimes the switch can be disorienting the first try. Aesthetics are great. This developer has a really distinct crisp and glowy style, though the visuals are more cartoony in this title than the stained-glass look of Redout 1. Music is peppy symphonic techno. Sadly the voice acting is pretty phoned in. The main downside of this game and the worst holdover from its mobile roots is all the stat unlocking. You've got to do a lot of grinding just to increase your max missile lock by one shot. Also I haven't beaten the game yet so no idea if it has a new game+ for your fully upgraded ship. For a game this cheap and this pretty, I'm happy. It's not Freespace 2, Everspace, or even Redout 1, but it's definitely a fun rollercoaster ride.

Hard to recommend

As someone who enjoyed the first Redout, enjoys on rail shooters, and dislikes mobile games, I find it hard to like this game. The action is fun and sometimes intense, but the levels are over all too soon. Story felt very basic and uninteresting. Which is unfortunate because many missions have a bit at the beginning where it's only flying so the player can give all their attention to the dialogue. There is a skip option at least. The ability to customize your ship from the start was an unexpected and welcome touch. Music sounds good from the little I can hear when the guns weren't firing. Overall I advise to pass unless you don't mind mobile ports and have a few dollars to spare.

First impression

This game was originally available since last year on Apple Arcade and for iOS (iPhone/iPad). Now it got a PC port. The game is an arcade space shooter mostly on-rails, but there are also some missions/sections were you can freely fly. On my first try, i played with keyboard. It's not simple to play with keyboard, but it can be managed. I believe, that with a controller it would be much smoother, right now I don't have one at my test. But will have to test it more ... No mouse support outside the menus. There are different skins, your ship can be ugraded with the money you get after successfully finishing a mission. You also get cards for simple upgrades. I had no problems with running it, the FPS is almost constant on my 75 Hz display. I didn't encounter any bugs. Yet. Will have to play more. Played on: Ryzen 6 1600AF, 32 GB RAM, Geforce GTX 1650 4 GB GDDR5, 512 GB SATA SSD, Windows 10 Home 64-bit. Here is a short gameplay on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW1szqq42Qc
