Description
Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville is a strategy sim game with a good helping of narrative and dark humor. It's a thoughtful game that'll make you fond of your survivors before you send them to their deaths for the greater good. As you expand your fort to new buildings, you'll decide between farms or fortifications, housing or hospitals, and make tough decisions to fend off raiders, illness, starvation, and madness. And the dead are still out there wandering the streets, hungrier than ever.

Gangs of Deadsville is the third of Sarah Northway's Rebuild series, and the first one available as a full PC downloadable. It's a totally new, much bigger game than the first two.
  • 4X style strategy and city (re)building
  • Endless replayability with randomized cities and events
  • Survivors with individual skills, perks, relationships, and stories
  • Rival NPC forts with their own agendas, friendly or otherwise
  • Strategic fort defense and interactive attacks
  • Play in either real-time or turn-based mode

How to play story mode

My wife made this game so I have playtested it more than anyone and can tell you that it is addictive and awesome. BUT there's a bug in version 1.0.0 that disables the story mode button. To fix it: start a quick play game, then quit to the main menu and the story button will be enabled.

Zombie-themed 4X

If you're after a light zombie-themed 4X game with a very strong sense that you're always making progress, that doesn't become overwhelming towards the end game, that doesn't have dead time following an initial expansion/exploration rush, that strips out a lot of tedious micromanagement, and if you like your 4X games to completely play out in a couple of hours each, then this is your game. Rebuild will appeal particularly to turlers like me, that is, players who like to build a solid and impenetrable perimeter before expanding further, then to push out to nab a bit of territory here and a strategic resource there. Over time, your territory gets bigger and bigger, but every gain is hard fought and locked down. Rebuild 3 might be my perfect game. Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville is not a realistic zombie simulator, it contains cartoonish graphics, cannibalism, and over the top stereotypes. You can convert a field of rubble into a tower apartment block with a single builder. It's fun. Obviously, however, if what you're after is something dark, brooding and 'realisic', this game is not for you. One more thing. This was originally a mobile game. It plays really well on the mobile. If you want your mobile games to stay on mobile then feel free to buy it there (you will have to wait a couple of months for the mobile release). But I'm mostly a PC player and I like my big screen and mouse control. Regardless, Rebuild doesn't feel like a mobile game in that it's not particularly 'clicky', menus work like PC menus and the interface works like a PC interface. Still, it doesn't have infinite tech trees or massive worlds or complex animation and that's a huge part of it's appeal.

Base game excellent. Quest design bad.

This is a fantastic casual strategy game, easily five stars. However, the story mode is 3 stars at best, because the design of the quest for the "good ending" is horrible. If you read a guide you will see what I mean. You have to wall off certain buildings so that no faction can touch them, not even you, until something happens, then you touch the buildings in a special way. And it keeps going like that. There's no way a real defender of a city would make any of those choices. I recommend you buy the game for the quick play strategy, and read a guide on how to solve the "Monkey's Blood" quest, before deciding whether to invest the time in Story Mode.

It's alright

Solid game, but the campaign can be rather too long and repetitive. If you ever played the original mobile version, here are the main differences: - Rival factions you can trade with and possibly either fight or ally. - Real-time action progress. - Survivor specialization. - No winter mode, as far as I could see.

Excellent city building game.

As a fan of the first two in the series I had to give this a try and it didn't disappoint. One of the most fun strategies I have seen and with plenty or replay value.
