WELCOME TO THE FUTURE

The year is 2084. The future has turned out much darker than anyone could imagine. First, there was the Nanophage. A digital plague that killed thousands upon thousands of those who chose to augment their minds and bodies.

Then came the War, leaving both the West and the East decimated and shattered. With no one left to seize power, corporations took over and forged their own crooked empires.

You are a tool of corporate oppression. Feared and despised, you hack into the darkest corners of your suspects’ minds. You creep into their dreams, expose their fears, and extract whatever your investigation may require.

You are an Observer.

BECOME A NEURAL DETECTIVE

You play as Daniel Lazarski, an elite investigator of the future portrayed by late cyberpunk icon Rutger Hauer. As an Observer, you hack into the minds of suspects to extract clues and evidence. Anything they felt, thought, or remembered can and will be used to solve your case.

EAT THEIR DREAMS

Using a device known as the Dream Eater, hack into the minds of the dead and dying to relive their final moments, to explore their fears and obsessions. Delve into these twisted neural mazes and search for clues that will help you find the elusive killer. But beware: the deeper you go, the greater the risk of losing your own sanity.

TAKE IN THE ATMOSPHERE OF 2084

Enter a world ravaged by war and cyber-plague, where life is cheap and hope is scarce. Where most people will do anything to escape their grim existence. Virtual realities, mind-altering drugs, neural implants - pick your poison and drift away into a blissful oblivion. But remember, no matter how deep you go, you can never hide from an Observer.

Veteran Observers can dive deeper into this dystopian reality thanks to three brand-new side cases to solve. “Errant Signal”, “Her Fearful Symmetry” and “It Runs in the Family” add another layer of depth to the game’s story while exploring thought-provoking themes of a future that soon might become our present.

On top of that, System Redux offers expanded gameplay, which includes new game mechanics, new secrets to find, redesigned stealth, additional neural interrogations, and quality-of-life improvements made with the help of the Observer community.

Newcomers get the chance to experience one of the most thrilling cyberpunk stories in all its next-gen glory: boasting 4K resolution, upgraded textures, new animations, models and effects, and transformed with jaw-dropping Ray-Tracing and HDR lighting.

This game is not what you think it is.

Attracted by the setting I bought this game the day System Redux version was out. I mean what’s not to like? You’re playing as a cyborg cop in a cyberpunk setting solving crimes and watching the neon lit city at night switching between different black market implants and meddling in the plans of big evil corporations! Sign me up this instant! But reality turned out to be completely different. You see, this game is actually an attempt at some psychedelic horror. Yes, you’ve heard right – you will have not much in the way of hacking and crime solving but rather “suddenly chairs are on the ceiling, pottery is talking, some tentacles are covering the walls and monsters from ‘Soma/Amnesia the dark descend’ are chasing you” situations. The devs like this psycho stuff so much they use it to convey most of the story. For instance, there is a point in the game when you must “interrogate” a dead victim of a crime. The poor sod has an implant that records everything that goes on around him, so the gory details of his untimely death are no doubt stored there. Luckily our cyber-cop is perfectly equipped for a situation like this – he has a special probe that can connect to the implant. But if you (like me) expect that probing to show you the last minutes of the victim’s life or provide some valuable information in a sane and sensible way you are wrong. What you get instead is a bunch of strange blinking shapes, some black mannequins moving erratically, and other psychedelic BS, that shows you in a very abstract way what happened – dressing it with tons and tons of visual mess. That visual mess is an ever-present feature of this game. You will be constantly annoyed by it because it is used on every turn and step. The epilepsy warning was put on this game for a reason! So… If you are into games like Soma, Amnesia etc it will probably be ok for you. But if you expect a no-nonsense game in a cyberpunk setting, with hacking etc – I wouldn't recommend this one.

HEADS UP: Quickly exhausts the eyes

This is more of a heads up than a review. The game has a rich premise, the sound design and music is really cool. Maybe its a little slow paced for me, but that's not why I'm reviewing. I'm writing this review is to warn potential purchasers against plunking down the cash unless they have a high tolerance for eye strain. It has a standard seizure warning, sure. Just be aware that, even if you aren't at risk for a seizure, you may walk away after a session feeling nausea, eye pain and headache. But if that's not you then go ahead and check it out.

Wait for performance patch before buying

The original Observer game is a must-have game for sci-fi, narrative game fans. Highly recommended!! 4.5 star game. The Redux version is a big step up in improved graphics, gameplay and additional game content. But... The Redux version as of November 23, 2020 has some annoying and somewhat persistent performance issues. Specifically micro stutters and significant frame rate drops. Fortunately I've seen the developers responding on various forums, so they are aware and working on the issues. So given enough time I'm sure they'll fix the problems. But I would suggest being patient and wait until you see evidence on forums and other sources that the performance issues have been fixed. I had previously purchased the original Observer, so I was able to buy the Redux version for only $6.99. But I would recommend full price for either version. Buy original version for an older PC and Redux version for a newer PC. As a comparison my PC specs are: Intel i5-8400, nVidia GTX 1660 Super 6GB, 16GB RAM, Windows 10 Home Edition. On Original version I got consistent 60FPS at 1920x1200 max video settings (measured using MSI Afterburner). Occasional micro stutters. On Redux version I averaged FPS of 45-50 with best FPS of 60 with regular FPS drops down to 30-35 FPS. Frequent micro stutters. Dropping resolution down to 1680x1050 did not eliminate micro stutters or the drastic frame rate drops. It was better than at 1920x1200, but it was still pretty bad. I had to go all the way down to a horrible 1280x800 resolution to get reasonably consistent frame rates, but even then micro stutters were fairly common. Once the developers work out the kinks on micro stutters and frame rate drops, the new Redux version is a definite improvement on a really great game.

Pretty solid cyberpunk story walking sim

I know “walking simulator” is pretty much an insult for a game, to most people. But the thing is... I don’t really agree. It might be weird to read, but I don’t really play games for gameplay per se. I play games for an emotional/intellectual experience (TM) – to feel something, or reflect on something interesting. If I wanted perfect gameplay, I’d just play chess over and over again. And “Observer” is generally a solid tier walking sim in my opinion – definitely engaging enough to keep me going. It’s a rather classic cyberpunk story, in a way – it doesn’t do anything that outrageously innovative or mind-blowing, but it has enough set pieces to keep me engaged. You play as Daniel Lazarski, an Observer in the 5th Polish Republic of 2080s. What’s an observer? It’s kind of a neural interrogator, that can connect to the minds of others, and get their deepest secrets laid bare. Don’t let me lie to you – the game really IS an epitome of a walking simulator. There’s really nothing to do in the game than just walking and looking around – most of the “puzzles” solve themselves, the “dialogue” usually consists of choosing one of two options, and there are really no enemies to speak of that would require any meaningful action out of you, barring one or two pre-set stealth sections. But if you relent to that, I think the exploration and the story in Observer are actually not half-bad. The game has a very bleak color-palette, which if fitting, since it takes place in Poland. Heh. The story hits a lot of tried and true cyberpunk tropes – as I said, none of them are particularly groundbreaking, but they are well presented enough to still be kinda interesting. Overall, though, Observer was good enough for me. Not mindblowing, but intersting enough to not make me feel like I wasted my time after playing it. The OG version is better

The redux may have better textures and lighting, but the contrast is horrendous, all the colors look desaturated, I prefer the og version, it has a strong contrast that intensifies the visual effetcs and feels more fitting for the game, And that's why I give it fours stars instead of 5, the story is great and the whole journey is bonkers, impecable voice acting, amazing music, just woonderful. If you can get your hands on the OG version, do so.
