Description
Professional assassin turned amateur campaign manager Steve is charged with cleaning up the city by an anthropomorphic rabbit and mayoral candidate from the future named BunnyLord. Now Steve and his expanding roster of dubious heroes must wield their unique skills to shoot, slide, dive, and take cover behind a political platform built on ethics, accountability, and an inordinate amount of gunfire. Eliminate the criminal underworld of the city’s three major districts and persuade undecided voters to your cause, tackling the issues that matter by putting a gun in the mouth of those issues.

Through the power of ISO-Slant™ technology and a wasted youth, London-based developer Roll7 (OlliOlli) delivers the greatest 2¼D cover-based indie shooter of all-time, ever.

Features

Next Level Shootouts – Use reasonable force unreasonably in a dynamic mix of run-and-gun gameplay and cover-based shootouts. The intuitive quick-snap cover system lets you slide, roll, and dive into cover, dodging enemy fire before fighting back with tackles, executions, and 100s of bullets.

Roster of Not Heroes - Select between 9 different heroes, each with their own distinct gameplay style and crime murdering abilities. Blast the city’s scum through doors with Cletus’ a shotgun, slice them in half with Kimmy’s katana dash, or simply bash crime in its terrible face with Ronald’s hammer.

Dynamic Missions – Go ham on primary objectives and (sometimes random) secondary goals but be prepared for unexpected mid-level events that turn the tables on the anti-heroes in an instant. SWAT teams, gun-toting elderly, helicopter gunships, pandas, pugs and suicidal samurais stand between you and victory.

Fantastic for what it is

This game is a 2.5D stylized action shooter. It's both simple and complex; in every level, you get assigned one main task and three optional side tasks like setting off certain bombs or freeing hostages. The story is centered around helping a purple bunny of dubious intentions get elected as supreme overlord of. He briefs and debriefs you before and after each mission with slightly randomized humor. Certain nouns, adjectives, and adverbs are changed randomly each time, which sometimes creates genuinely funny sentences, but at other times the humor seems cheap. The game really shines in its gameplay. Missions become progressively more intense and as I unlocked more characters I found myself enjoying it more and more. Characters are unlocked through gaining voter support, which is accomplished both through completing main objectives and optional objectives, and the characters themselves all play uniquely and change the game entirely. I found myself refusing to move on to the next mission until I'd finish completing all the previous one's optional objectives, just to see what interesting new way the next character played. Once you start unlocking the fast characters, the missions become incredibly chaotic and fast-paced and even when a level is particularly challenging, losses don't feel frustrating. Instead they reward you with a better sense of how the level works and how it can be completed. The gameplay is very fun and the controls are tight and simple enough to make this game fun for players of any skill level. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is for two reasons. The briefings and debriefings by Bunnylord are entirely skippable, but you can't skip each individual line of text when you're finished reading it. You have to wait. (This could be easily fixed with a patch) The other reason is sometimes the randomized adjectives include slurs like the R slur, which doesn't serve a significant enough purpose to justify its placement. Great game though!

Over-sold by its trailer

Not a Hero is a game that's over-sold by its trailer more-so than many games. The trailer attempts to imply varied and constantly-hectic action along with a small dose of humor. While the game certainly does manage hectic action a good amount of the time- it becomes tedious action disturbing quickly the further you get due to unenjoyable level designs, and an infuriating end game. And it doesn't help that the trailer is the only place where little humor can be found here. So I can blame myself for coloring my expectations a bit too high with this one. Still though, It's not that Not a Hero is outright bad. But its got pretty much nothing amazing, or even great going for it. Those with a high tolerance for repetition will probably enjoy it though, since the core gameplay is solid on its own when you forgive the level and enemy design. Pros: - Simple and Solid central gameplay that makes for relatively constant hectic action. - Sharp controls. - Good character selection, supporting a decent number of playstyles. - Completionists have a decent number of additional challenges to look forward to. Cons: - Infuriating end game. - Frankly repetitive and unenjoyable level design that results in feelings of repetition and tedium. - Some levels feel way too long- which is disturbing since most of the levels are meant to be beat in less than 2-4 minutes. - For the aforementioned lengthy levels: there are no checkpoints. So be ready to repeat the game's more frustrating encounter chains ad-nauseam. Recomendation: Get Broforce instead- also published by Devolver Digital. It's better in every way.

absolutely stunning!

I have to say before I go on, that this is not exactly the longest game I've ever played. Having said that, it is absolutely stunning! Although you're able to choose between unlockable characters, the progression is rather linear. You will notice how bonus objectives are cut out for the latest unlockable character, so you'll have to go back and finish each level to 100%. It's doable, but it's also really challenging. I could say it's frustrating, but it's equally rewarding at it. What starts out as a fun shooter hence subsequently becomes an ultra brutal puzzle game. And great at it. If you like to restart levels over and over again until you nail them, this is for you. I can see how a lot of gamers would hate it for that. They try to make the briefings and debriefings funny, but the humour is a bit too slow for my taste. The soundtrack on the other hand is mind-blowing. It felt like each level had its own theme and each one really really awesome. This game is absolutely recommendable and quite the must-buy for any platformer/splatter enthusiast!

Hot Shooting Action!

If you're a shooting fan of 2D games then you should try this. It reminds me of Elevator action, but much more violent and more gameplay mechanics. It's a run and gun-type gameplay. You can shoot, slide, take cover and execute opponents at point-blank. You need to shoot your way through maze-like buildings and try to at least complete the main objective of three. You start out with your normal gun, but in the building there are a variety of power-ups of special bullets and secondary bomb-type weapon(try the cat bomb). Along the way you will recruit different characters with different skills for each. The sound effects and music are great. The story line is humorous along with the quirky humorous dialog of your boss, Bunny Lord. It's not so mindless because if you want to complete all of the objectives you will have to choose the best person for the job, memorize the pathway and plan attacks. This is what will make you choose "Restart Level" again and again. The worst thing that I can say about it is that the level designs all take place in a building. I'd like to see a variety of themed areas. Also while the graphics are purposely made to be 2D pixel graphics, I would still like to see better graphics at least at the 16-bit level.

The greatest game of all time. For me.

Before anything, this review comes after my third playthrough at 100 percent completion and every single time I play, it never gets old (you get it if you go behind the first couple of levels) And now...something personal This is the game that made love indie games or games in general No, seriously Of all the amount of games I've played, THIS is THE utterly gorgeous astonishing magical magnificent spectacular murderous truly favourite game of all time (with guns!) Before I start explaining why, I gonna say a thing I rarely say when writing reviews: you can safely disregard every single other review on this site, if they are not giving the game at least a 4 star, they are not worth listening to So, I could spend hours talking about its ingenuity and all of its features, both in gameplay and in the idea behind it the story.. and linguistics? Yup, as a scholar of linguistics myself, I was taken away from its unique word generator, which changes not only some word in BunnyLord speeches while keeping all coherent(and some object as well) Also, NoH touches both proper British satire (usually it's all about America) and true political factors as, for example, the praising made by a politician of hyper violent method in treating criminals Gameplay wise, It looks like a simple 2d shoot em up, and that's actually what it is: simple yet profound gameplay And a remarkable number of character, masterful designed in both mechanics and personality ( Wells.. YES IT'S A REAL PLACE) Indeed, every single character fits in their role perfectly. And then, the star of the show: BunnyLord, whom may seem a simple nosense character, and there you'd be dead wrong To be frank, every single other aspect of the game is astonishing Soundtrack: dope as f**k Graphic: very single pixel hides a little detail ( only downside? background, sometimes, are a little repetitive) I'm running out of words SO... Buy it!(believe or not, not saying this as a fan boy) God, hope one day they will make the sequel
