Description
Spiderweb Software's classic adventure of treachery and battle in ancient times has returned! Travel back to ancient Britannia for a tale of cunning foes, vicious battles, and a race to rediscover the lost secrets of magic.

Britannia is a land ravaged by war. The natives of this land, the savage Celts, have long been subjugated by the Roman invaders. At last, they have risen up in bloody rebellion. Battles rage across the land. Cities are sacked, the inhabitants massacred. And, lost in the chaos, in the small, forgotten valley of Shadowvale, a plan is being formed.

Soon, a band of barbarians will rediscover the lost secrets of magic. They will find a way to rid their lands of their oppressors forever. And you, as the Celtic warriors, will attempt to free your people.

Or you, as the Romans, will attempt to crush them. For the good of the Empire.

Key Features

  • Two different sides, the powerful Romans and the savage and cunning Celts. Each side has a completely different full-length adventure.

Great concept. Good enough execution

It's an old Spiderweb game. Clunky UI, schematic graphics, simple but reasonably interesting turn-based combat. If you've played other Spiderweb games, you know the formula. If not: you create a party of 4+ characters and explore an overland world map covered in big dungeons and lots of secrets. There's an interesting story, but you won't find much in the way of memorable characters or snappy dialogue. Most of your time is spent bashing goblins. So why four stars? Mostly because it does a number quite interesting things. Interesting Premise: A Roman expeditionary force in the days of Claudius' invasion of Britain finds its way to the land of the Fae. There, Roman rationalism meets Celtic mysticism in a struggle that may decide the fate of the Roman empire itself. The writing makes a credible effort in setting the scene and make it feel like you are in ancient Britain. And funnily enough... history does not contradict the story of this game, whatever outcome occurs. Two games for the price of one: You can play as Romans or as Celts, and have an almost completely different (if parallel) story. You start in a different place, fight different foes, have different abilities and playstyle. Allies in one story are enemies in the next. But you still have choices to make and can influence the outcome whichever side you choose. Charm. None of the above would be enough to overcome its flaws if Nethergate did not work as a game. Fortunately, the game works better than it should based on my desccriptoin. The combat is fun enough, the choices are interesting enough, and there is just a lot to see and do. And though the art is primitive, it does have some very amusing drawings for all the ablities. In summary: I recommend this game to people who are intruiged by the idea and the setting, and to people who like old-school clunky RPGs. I personally have a soft spot for it. (Disclaimer: I bought this game ages ago on Spiderweb's website, and have not replayed it recently.)

Interesting and unique adventurous RPG

I'd really wish for a remake of this game with its unique pseudo-historical scenario and the clash between Romans and Celts it portrays. There is much to like about this game: The two very distinct playable groups (the Romans being the more "robust", weapon-affine, the Celts being inspired by their ancient druidic magics), the interesting quests, the open world exploration full of things and details to discover, the well written prose... It's one of those titles that impressively demonstrate that graphics aren't important if the rest of the design is well executed.

No modern frills, pure bliss

For Spiderweb fans like me: just get it, do not worry about how unpleasant may be the outdated graphics and user interface, less than a hour in and you'll have adapted. I can't believe I replayed bazillion times every other Spiderweb game, before giving this pearl a chance. For everyone else: if you have never played the Avernum series before, play that first and then come back to this if you enjoyed it. The game is great but it is old (forget about clicking a NPC to initiate combat or dialogue...), so you may want to try something very similar but a bit more user friendly. The story is nice, the turn-based combat system is fun, the writing is excellent. 50h of playthrough, zero of which spent in loading times (old man ranting about modern day customs here...)

Like Avernum

It's a decent game, plays like Avernum. My only issue with the graphics is, while it plays well on a modern system, the default settings give you beautiful large screens when creating characters and starting, however when the game itself starts, especially on the world map, groups and images are too tiny to make out and it's difficult to figure out if you're going to the right place or have an encounter. It takes getting used to, even if you're familiar with the Avernum series, BUT overall it's a decent game. Three stars only because by now there should have been a default setting so you could actually see everything. Yes, it's an older game, but you really shouldn't have to mess with the settings before playing it, it should default to the original, and then you can decide if you want higher settings. Common sense. Buy it on sale, full price only to support the developer. I'd love to see this remade.
