You are Alan 'The Bear' Westmoreland, Marine Corps sergeant. The trouble starts on a deadly Viet Cong raid. Here the jungle is your battleground.
Your mission, survive.
NAM captures all of intensity and paranoia of jungle warfare. Fire-fights, ambushes, booby-traps, snipers, air-strikes, anti-...
True US military standard issue weapons and equipment; M60 Machine Gun, M79 Grenade Launcher, M16 Rifles, Flame-throwers, C4 Plastic Explosives, Mine detectors and much more...
Sadly, the GoG-Version here is a badly configured DOSBox setup. It doesn't run smooth and even has some major graphical glitches.
My recommendation:
1. Download the latest eDuke32 package, extract it into it's own folder.
2. Buy the game here, install it, then go to the installation folder of NAM and copy the files "GAME.CON" and "NAM.GRP" into the eDuke32-folder.
3. Run "eDuke32.exe", select "NAM" in the launcher and click "Start".
4. It's done! Enjoy the better graphics and much better controls! :)
If you ever wished Wolfenstien 3D and Doom had skipped any imaginative undertakings and just went full on Missing In Action 3 Chuck Norris rampage, then check this bad boy out. Clearly repetative in nature, but will hit you with some grit that is hard to come by these days.
The game succeeds at what it wants, create a game based on the war of Vietnam, but it also succeeds at killing you in the most random, cruel and unexpected ways possible, its mechanics are annoying, it takes a lot of stuff from Duke Nukem 3D and i swear it gave me PTSD with how broken its balancement was.
Find any review on YouTube about this game and the consensus will probably be the same. It's pretty bad. You die constantly and the difficulty setting doesn't seem to affect anything.
Most deaths have nothing to do with skill. Mostly it's not knowing what to expect. You can't really approach a situation with any kind of strategy or tactics because as soon as an enemy is in line of sight they are shooting at you.
Mines are probably the biggest offender. You walk on them and you die. You have a chance to disarm them but most of the time it happens so quick you don't have time to react, and when you do try to disarm them it's a 50/50 chance it works.
The infinitely spawning enemies is the second worst offender, and enemies that spawn behind you along with that.
The game requires save-scumming. I'd recommend saving after every kill, and occasionally change your quick save slot in case you save in a bad spot.
One mission had me completely lost because there was a pit you are meant to jump down to get into a bunker system and I couldn't see it due to the brush so I walked around for about an hour in this map with infinitely spawning enemies until I finally watched a YouTube video on it to see if maybe the mission was bugged.
Really the worst thing about the game... The absolute worst thing... Is that there are awesome moments. This game has a lot of cool things. There's some cool fire fights, there's air strikes that feel awesome. Some of my favorite moments were running through a village and mowing down enemies with the M-60 and feeling like a real super soldier, and then... I died. After all that awesomeness I died from something I never saw, probably something that spontaneously spawned behind me. So it's like even the awesome moments are ruined.
Are you going to enjoy it? Probably parts of it, but you'll also be incredibly frustrated.
It is a solid production about Vietnam. Briefly, the game is divided into two campaigns.
The first one, with lots of passages and paths leading to the goal, can be said
that it is almost half-open. It perfectly reflects the atmosphere of Vietnam, everywhere are full of mines, forests overcrowded with soldiers, we often fall under fire of friendly fire (planes). Here are some tips that I developed while going through this campaign.
First, don't be afraid to use all weapons, each has its own purpose.
My primary weapon was the M16, great accuracy, cuts the VC perfectly.
I used the M60 mainly for shelling forests, when the enemy could be lurking everywhere,
an excellent weapon for spray and pray tactics and for repelling all kinds of ambushes. M79 similarly. Grenades and a shotgun are perfect for cleaning rooms and tunnels. The only weapon I haven't used is a knife. Great campaign, there are two rules when moving through overgrown areas, it is best to crawl to be able to catch any mines, after some time you will learn to distinguish them from the environment and start avoiding the denser bushes in which they may hide. The problem appears when we are in a mined area and additionally under fire. However, there are really many ways to get there in this campaign, so that shouldn't be a problem. The second campaign is much more linear and much easier. You can play it like Doom game. I recommend. The game has its own atmosphere and character. Great old school shooter. 5/5
