Description

In the kingdom of Mystralia, it takes more brains than brawn to succeed. You will face down giant, powerful creatures and navigate treacherous terrain. You will encounter puzzles that confound even the wisest of the old sages. And you must overcome obstacles put in place by people who do not want you to succeed.

Your path will not be easy. In Mages of Mystralia, you play as Zia, a young girl who discovers that she has been born with an innate sense of magic. Unfortunately, magic has been banned, so she strikes off to train on her own to gain some control over her powers. On her journey, she meets other exiled mages and, discovers runes with magical properties and realizes that she can combine these runes in millions of different ways to come up with completely new spells.

The story was written by bestselling author Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms fantasy world for Dungeons and Dragons, which served as the basis for games like Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights, as well as about 170 fantasy books.

Classic Zelda with Procedural Magic

This game plays just like old school Zelda, but instead of hack and slash, you have a procedural spell system where you can craft unique spells. This makes is comparable to Magicka, but it plays with far less difficultly, chaos, yet with a bit more complexity when crafting spells. Taking a completionist approach helps, as it will increase the probability you'll find more runes and power-ups, which will increase the amount of options and nuance for crafting spells. The gameplay is otherwise direct and simple. The plot is uninspired and the lore is undeveloped, but has distinctive potential to be something great. The game features a fairly open exploration, though you will be limited by obstacles only surmountable by runes which you acquire through the critical path. The graphics are colorful, stylized, and will run well on most machines. The music is oustanding and provides a child-like sense of wonder throughout the game. The overall challenge is light, both in terms of combat and puzzles. The real enjoyment to be had is for the sort of person that really enjoys crafting the ideal spells. There is definitely something great here, and it's worth the price (currently $25 USD). It offers casual play, exploration, some charm, and a wonderfully nuanced spell crafting system that will delight a particular type of player. It's a pretty good game, and I very much look forward to a follow-up that takes the lessons learned in this game and expands upon them both in terms of gameplay and narrative.

Great for relax after work :)

Basicly game is pretty easy. You're able to create enough powerful spells to kill enemy with one shot, but they always attack in horde, so one mistake may be your last mistake ;) It is more puzzles game than action, so don't be surprised. And puzzles aren't hard either. It is often pretty obvious what to do, but main challange is to create a correct spell. It took me 12h to beat the entire game (100%) and I must say that it is satisfying to see what chaos you are able to do ;)

Disappointing and Underdeveloped

This game has a lot of potential, but most of it is unrealized. The spell crafting system seems fun at first--it's less twitchy and easier to deploy than Magicka's--but has more of the appearance of versatility than actual versatility. The first time you hunt for a rune just to make a spell that is only used to solve one puzzle and has no other uses, you realize that breadth masks a lot of shallowness. The world is also underdeveloped. The gameplay is repetitive. It has the feel of an ARPG, but none of the systems that make that sort of game enjoyable. If you're bored and it's heavily discounted, it has some interesting mechanics that might be worth at least experiencing, but it isn't a good game.

Steam user here

It's addictive puzzle "be a mage" game. It's well done, you can craft a spells, it features female protagonist and it's awesome. Too bad there's too many timed puzzles, so if you're slow or don't have quality gamepad, maybe it's not for you. It's still amazing game, too bad game developer thought timed puzzles are good idea.

Unimpressive

Everything about Mages of Mystralia is technically functional but does not add up to a very entertaining whole. Everything you'll see here you will have seen already seen in other games and done better. Graphics look nice, sound is okay, the bosses are a minor highlight but can drag on with extremely telegraphed attacks and no possibility to speed up the battle as you can only hit them within per-determined breaks of their attack loops. The one thing Mystralia has going for it is the ability to combine different spells to create new spells. Majority of them are rather situational however and mostly used to solve puzzles to gather upgrades, wich are hardly necessary to progress as the game's difficulty is rather low. Plot & characters are underwhelming, combat feels clunky, movement is like slipping on soap. It has the feel of a typical current era low budget 3D game, it reminded me a lot of Stories Path of Destinies. There are certainly worse games you could be playing but I can't see anything worth recommending here either. Play Hob instead if you want a decent Action Adventure with light puzzle solving, or maybe Ittle Dew if you want challenging puzzles.
