Description
Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is an action roguelite with RPG elements. You explore randomly generated levels based in H.P. Lovecraft stories, fighting cultists and all kinds of monsters from the Mythos, improving your weapons and gear, solving puzzles and challenges, and looking for clues and knowledge to defeat the Great Old Ones and the Outer Gods.

LIVE H.P. LOVECRAFT’S STORIES

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is based on H.P. Lovecraft’s stories. You will experience first-hand the cosmic horror created by the genius of Providence. Every character will go through an investigation that will take them through different locations, from the creepy old Victorian mansion to the abandoned hospital where forbidden experiments take place or the jungle where lost tribes celebrate forgotten rituals, just to name a few. Levels are randomly generated: it will be a different experience every time you play. Also, they vary depending on the character you’re playing with. Look for items and clues to unlock secrets and new stories!

5 CHARACTERS, 5 WAYS OF FIGHTING THE MYTHOS

You can play as 5 different characters, each with a different playstyle and storyline. A private detective, a witch, a thief, a professor, and even a ghoul—each with different stats, weapons, and combat moves, creating five entirely different gameplay experiences. The Detective offers a balanced playstyle, with average Health and Stamina. The Professor is a specialist in ranged combat, with less Health and a special shield granted by his weapon, the Tillinghast. The Witch does a lot of damage, has teleport abilities and elemental shields of fire and ice, but also a very low Health. The Thief is a specialist in melée combat that takes advantage of its stealth to maximize her damage. The ghoul does a lot of melée damage, has a high Health and regenerates itself, but can’t use medkits at all.

DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE GREAT OLD ONES

The truth of the dark horrors that inhabit the universe is unbearable for any human mind. In the end, you can’t win against the Old Ones. Madness or death await you. But maybe you can delay the inevitable… If you face the Great Old Ones without any knowledge about them, you will go mad just by looking at their hideous features. But spread across every level you will find special items with information about the Great Old Ones. The more you know about them, the stronger your mind shall become – but knowledge is not easy to find, and if you are not thorough in your investigation you might get to the end of a storyline without finding everything that is to know. You will have to play with all the characters if you want to find all the information about every Great Old One!

MADNESS AWAITS

Insanity crawls behind every corner for those who face the Mythos. In your investigations, you will face different situations where you have to choose what to do – make the wrong decision and you will start losing your mind. In order to face the Great Old Ones, you need knowledge, and to find it you have to explore – but the more you explore the more events that shake your sanity you will find… Those who go mad under the influence of the Mythos take their own life to escape the eternal terror they are now looking at. Not all hope is lost, though – there are some ways to recover your sanity…

Untold Stories ? I know why now...

Most of the novels written by Lovecraft doesn't face the horror itself in the first place... "it" crawls around characters, affects them until you discover, too late, that there will be no salvation, only terrible aftermaths... or death. Lovecraft's Untold Stories has nothing to do with Lovecraft's novels. It only copies some of its creatures and setup. The rest is only a failed attempt to revive the unique atmosphere from Lovecraft's work. The Story is vague an uninterresting: A detective, follow his old police chief in an obscure investigation. At the scene, a "Resident Evil Mansion", apparently something went wrong and he decides to storm the place with only a miserable shotgun and his "brilliant" mind. Why "brilliant" ? Because when you activate certain pieces of furniture/item, and select one of the few options you have, they are almost all dumb or predictable. Or even the fact that you collect some useless books or pseudo informations that seems to have no purpose. Absolutely nothing is explained about this aspect during gameplay ! BUT this game would be good enough if the "finesse" of Lovecraft's stories was forgotten for fun gun blazings ? Unfortunately even this, it's awfull. First the basic weapon is a piece of garbage. Second enemies are right at the beginning fully armed and followed by Cthulu minions. Enraged cultists with sledgehammers that stuns, spell books that stuns, tommy guns wich makes you bleed, octopus things that poison you. Even an hilarious sentry turret that fires napalm !! And luckily, because of a bug, i could see giant mosquitos with laser rifles in the second level ! SERIOUSLY ?! Add to that horrible difficulty where enemies have perfect reflexes and vision in the dark, but not you.. Terrible controls even on a xbox gamepad. Throwing a grenade has never been that hard ! Same musique on both first and second levels. No explanation about sanity effect. Ect... Ect.. This game needs tons of work. Avoid it for now, there's no fun.

Avoid.

Started playing the game at version 1.11 The Bad : # 1 : It uses check point saves. No manual saves allowed. # 2 : You have no control over which area you travel to. # 3 : If you leave an area early, you can't go back to it. # 4 : If you leave an area early, you will not collect the necessary info on the Old Ones, that is required to survive the last battle. # 5 : If you are forced to load from a check point save, all items loose the abilities they grant PERMANENTLY. # 6 : Combat ... requires two hands on the keyboard and one on the mouse, SIMULTANEOUSLY. # 7 : EGA graphics make detecting the various traps / hazards and available paths, very hard.

Misleading reviews? :/

You know, I understand that not every game will satisfy everyone but it feels an awful lot like someone organized a vendetta against this game, regardless of how good it is. That said, I personally LOVE this game. The gameplay can be summarized as Roguelike with procedurally generated levels made up of discrete rooms connected by hallways. All of the action happens in rooms, and there is an auto-mapping feature that keeps you informed of how the rooms connect to each other as you explore. The game does a lot of things right for the horror genre -- you don't get a 'sanity gauge' just some graphical hints and cues from your character as to how they are coping; Much of the damage done by enemies is damage over time so fights have consequence even after you've won; enemies will group up and swarm you if you don't deal with them quickly, and many are capable of charging right to you if you aren't actively taking cover. I play on Easy mode since I'm not a fan of twitchy gameplay and I'm in it for the story, and I'm finding it to be a fair challenge. The theme is what really sets this game apart. Clearly, the designers have read the source material well. The enemies that come from elements of Lovecraft's work are instantly recognizable, and the ones that aren't still fit the theme well. The clues sprinkled throughout the game will make references to characters and features from stories in a sensible way and the game rewards players for having a balanced sense of caution versus managed risk when interacting with 'clickables' and the choices presented. There are, of course, concessions to gameplay but at least there is an attempt to provide appropriate diagesis. The hub is strongly implied to be Yithian, which has implications for those who have read the stories, and the appearances of the gear shops are just priceless. This is a well-designed game that was clearly someone's love letter to classic horror literature, and it's Roguelike done right!

Very cool ideas, but...

First of all: I like the setting, I really like, what the game did in regards to atmosphere, and I love the art style. But: The game is too frustrating. You often die without knowing what killed you. You have a ton of items, but don't know, what half of them do. You also have no way of finding out, since the game doesn't tell you anything. When you inevitably die, you lose about an hour of progress each time, since there is no free saving. The developer says, that this game is a rogue-like, but for that it has too many story elements, too many repeating content, and you will eventually get sick of seeing it for the fifth time, after dying once again because of sheer bad luck. I want to like this game, but it does not let me.

Cool aesthetic, bad game

This game is horribly balanced and designed. Half the time the enemies are completely immune to status effects such as frozen or burning, making your items and abilities useless. Meanwhile, every single hit from them gives a status debuff that slowly kills or stunlocks you unless you have the right consumable or equipted charm to immune it. So it comes down to raw luck (getting and choosing to equip the right items). Even when you do things right, the gameplay is extremely tedious. Go into a room, get frozen instantly and die. Restart the entire level, this time equiping ice immunity gear. Replay the same level, go into the room, roflstomp the enemy, spam healing and cure items, run around looting everything to get more items, rinse and repeat. It would be one thing if there was a good story, but the game has absolutely no driving plot whatsoever. You just pick a hero, get a cute little backstory, and that's it. Aside from inspecting various items that usually make you go insane (even though you can mericlessly slaughter rooms packed with Shoggoths for hours on end and not go insane), there is no dialouge. You literally teleport from mission to mission with no explanation or plot to connect them. It's dull, mind numbing, and tedious. This is a by-the-books looter shooter/bullet hell game with annoying rouge-lite elements that's simply "skinned Lovecraft". Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Lovecraft fan, and the mythos is accurately represented here, so I don't have a problem with taking the lore and using it in a vasty different way. It's just that the game has to be good. I wasn't expecting some detective masterpiece, I knew this was a looter-shooter/bullet hell game going into it. It's just that the game has to at least be good by those standards.
