Here's what you need to know: Little Nightmares is not a novel but a short story. A fantastic and memorable short story, that reads well and leaves you craving more. If that's what you're looking for, buy it, if not, don't.
It has been a while since I have playen a horror game (Amnesia: The Dark Descent) but this game gave me the chills of the creatures you encounter. Nevertheless, there are some pros and cons which I would like to give to buyers before buying this game.
+Graphics are supberb on this game
+Story has symbolism and deep thinking to make you want more as for others own opinions
+Atmosphere is morbid and scary
+Music has a child's ring in your ears with the unsettiling approach of the monsters
-The computer controls are somewhat annoying. I found the controls not bad but in some cases annoying. I lost in certain situations because of this.
-The time to beat this game is extremely short. I beat this game in less than 3 hours! 3 hours! After I was done, I wanted more. You only get to experience 3 monsters which were shown in the trailers of this game. (Never look at trailers again if you want anything to be spoiled.)
I gave this game 4/5 stars only for the time to beat this game. I wish it would have been longer. However, if you preordered this game with Inside then I believe it was a great steal.
The game looks great, the enemy design is awesome and the they nailed the atmosphere and immersion.
The story is interesting at first, but at the end i was disappointed how trivial the story was.
Sadly the gameplay has lots of problems too.
The platforming parts are extremely frustrating thanks to the imprecise controls and the 2,5 d graphics. Sometimes i didn't know where to go because it was hard to see with which environment i can interact with, one time i even stuck 10 mins in one room just to figure out that i can climb a certain wall. Then there are the chasing scenes which have lots of trial and error because you don't really know what to do and the timings are very tight,
So, would i recommend this game ? For the initial price not really, but after a price drop (or with the "Inside" bundle) i think its great for people who like these kinds of atmospheric games, even if it has its problems.
(BTW "Inside" did i much better job IMHO, so maybe play that game first)
It's not particularly good time for me to review this game because I haven't finished it yet, but. I have to point some things that might help you with decision wether to buy or not this game.
Yes, graphics and style are very nice, pleasant to watch.
Yes, the main character is easy to identify with.
Yes, the villains are made in clever and imaginative way.
But, the gameplay is sometimes real pain in the ass. And I mean it. I played it twice today, in both sessions I quit in anger. Let me explain.
Controles are not very thought trough. Often you have obstacle and you have to go trough some hole. But the hole is in some exact place, for example in the left half of the wall. And because of the point of view, you are looking at the game, it's hard to hit the hole and go trough. When someone is chasing you, you end up with few replays of the location just because of this.
But that's not the biggest problem. The most pain in the ass is the game's response to input. Often you find yourself solving the puzzle and trying to e.g. push this button or jump on this lever, but it doesn't work. So you think: "Ok, maybe that's not the right solution." After five minutes of real frustration, because you don't know what to do, you try the lever or the button again, or you go find walktrough on YT, and you find out that you were right in the first time, but back then it just didn't work. These things just make me angry.
So far I like the game, the visuals, the 'story', characters, but man, it can be annoying.
If you are a little bit choleric, in case of games, like me, I don't recomend you to buy this game.
I have been playing platformers for years now, in general its a genre that can always provide a quick burst of enjoyment. I also havent preordered a game since 2011, but Little Nightmares became the first exception to that rule. The atmoshere, the art style of the trailers flooding facebook had me transfixed; this Tim Burton/Coraline twisted vintage gothic art style with the Inside/Silent Hill Horror puzzle platforming just pushed all my buttons. And I can say after having played it in depth...it is almost better than I had hoped.
Now yes, I will adress the length...the game is pretty short, the singleplayer taking on average about 3 hours to complete. But also consider the original Portal, was only about 3-4 hours long in total, and personally I would call that one of my favourite games of all time. I have personally already finished the game but Im eager to get back in to attempt to find all of the secrets and get all of the 'Epic' achievements, and because I was honestly excited to get back into this beatifully dark world.
I would say the game surpasses Inside as a platformer as the added third dimension just adds more exploration and scope to each of the environments. The puzzles are probably on par as they never really caused too much of an issue, but the game absolutely does go above and beyond with its atmoshere and horror. Think of the 100s and 1000s of enemies you rip down in something like DooM (2016), but wonder what these creatures would be like if they hunted you alone, whilst you were a defencless and equally tiny nine year old. Imagine 4 different pyramid heads, all sick and twisted but unique in their own way in how they are fought, or avoided or how they might make you into a fine meal.
And as far as the price aswell; I personally didnt mind due to the amazing deal of recieving Inside completely for free, so effectively paying about £8 for each game. So I'd advise people to grab this deal as fast as you can because these are both astounding games.
