When all the villains in Arkham Asylum team up and break loose, only the dynamic duo is bold enough to take them on to save Gotham City. The fun of LEGO, the drama of Batman and the uniqueness of the combination makes for a comical and exciting adventure in LEGO Batman: The Videogame. Play as Batman and his sidekick Robin as you build, drive, swing and fight your way through Gotham City capturing escaped villains including The Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow and more. Then, jump into the story from the other side and play as Batman's foes! Enjoy the power you wield and battle Batman while spreading chaos throughout the city. There is no rest for the good (or evil!).

Darkness, No Parents, Super Rich

The first in the series of successful collaborations between the DC Batman franchise and LEGO. Batman, the self-proclaimed World's Greatest Detective, is of course everybody's favourite super-hero. Suave billionaire by day, irascible crime-fighter by night and perennial money-spinner. LEGO on the other hand, like Disney, is just your typical moneygrubbing corporation that can be found wherever there's money to be made. As for LEGO Batman, It's a simple 3-D action platformer crafted to appeal to younger gamers. The plot is rather mundane with the Joker (together with a bunch of other iconic villains) escaping from Arkham Asylum, the only maximum-security incarceration facility with an open door honour system. Gameplay is fairly straightforward, basically running around smashing bad guys and solving simple puzzles on the way to the inevitable Boss Fight. Beating a Batman mission unlocks the corresponding villain mission, allowing players to experience the game as their favourite villains. There are also plenty of collectibles and unlockables to encourage replay. Whilst it's a reasonably good game in solo mode, gaming with a co-op partner is where it shines. Local co-op is supported and Keyboard + Controller works well, but the lack of split-screen makes co-ordinating with your co-op partner essential, otherwise much shenanigans and hilarity will ensue. For a kid's game that doesn't take itself too seriously, it's surprisingly fun. What it lacks in complexity and sophistication, it more than makes up with charm and personality. Having played through this game to 100% with a 4-year old co-op partner, it's a definite two thumbs up from Batman and little Robin.

A Game So Fun, You'll Go Batty!

Lego Batman is a unique story that pays homage to the animated series as well as the comic books. The levels take you throughout Gotham City- not only as Batman and Robin, but also as the infamous villains. Each character has their own special abilities and gadgets. You can use a variety of vehicles on land, in the air, or at sea. Lego Batman is a great video game to add to your Lego game collection.

Good, Solid Fun

There are tons of LEGO Platformers that follow this formula, but it's super satisfying. You have big, puzzle-filled stages to explore, and gather studs. Take those studs back to the hub and use them to purchase new characters and superpowers; the superpowers make your life easier, but new characters often have abilities that let you reach new areas. It's technically a collect-a-thon, but with a very reasonable amount of things to collect. Overall, the game is pretty easy, too, since it's targeted toward a younger audience. This particular entry is based mostly on the Batman animated series from the '90s, so the environments are dark and gritty. Despite that, it's a LEGO game, so the tone is completely goofy, which is more reminiscent of the old Adam West series. It knows what it is, and it just wants to have some fun, which to me, is what Batman should be about. The music is alright, but there isn't all that much of it. I don't often say fun for all ages, but this is it; I'd recommend this to anyone who doesn't need a punishing challenge in every game they play.

Fun, kid-friendly adventure

This game is part of the "old-school Lego series (before thay had voiced lines), so their plots were very simplified (see Lego Star Wars I-III or Lego Indy). The plot is simple, an ensemble cast of Arkham inmantes have broken out and wreak havoc, it's up to the Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder (also Nightwing and Batgirl) to help Gotham. The levels feature a mix of simple brawling, platforming and co-op puzzles, with many secrets to find towards cheats, extra stuff, characters and a gallery. There is almost no challenge in that you have infinite lives and only lose some studs (currency) when dying. The only real challenge is some puzzles, one frustrating boss (Mr. Freeze) sometimes slippery controls and the sometimes dumb AI during certain puzzles (its script is rudimentary). The game mostly recycles a few tunes from the first two Batman movies, which get a little repetitive. However there are some cool shmup levels aboard the Batmobile, Batwing and Bat-Boat, and after beating Batman's side, you play the villains' side for a different take on the level (as the buildup to the Batman stage). There are also two bonus levels (Wayne Manor and Arkham Asylum) for extra replay. After beating a level, you can use any unlocked character in freeplay and some are mandatory for puzzles (clearly indicated within the level), so there is reason to replay a cleared stage and the cheats are fun to mess with. Getting 100% is only a matter of patience and a little memorization (and fighting the sometimes slippery controls). The game contains a lot of nods to the Batman universe and is suited for all ages. It's a very simple game that delivers very simple fun, with a sandbox feel because of how you rebuild the Lego world to solve the puzzles. In many ways, it's a toy more than game but it's fine by me, as long as it's good, and LEGO Batman is a light ride I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys Batman. Full price might be a lot today, but to me it's a no-brainer on sale.
