Great action/platformer, slow beginning
Being a fan of games such as Jak & Daxter and Rayman 2, I miss good old action/platformers, and I'm usually disappointed by new ones. I wasn't disappointed by this one. While not perfect, the game has great qualities, and you can see that the developers put some love into it. Pros : + Gameplay : great combat mechanics, explained one by one and easy to learn (except the side-rolling-while-fighting which is a bit tricky). Controls are fine, jumping has enough precision, and platforming is never frustrating. Interesting concepts for combat and platforming (zhongs, combos, ...). + Nice and colourful level design. For an old game, it has aged quite well. + Great variety : lots of different environments, different enemies, different weapons, lots of different moves, and some special game modes (races, boats, ...). + Great game length. Difficulty is fine and well balanced. The first level (the cat city) is a bit annoying and too easy, but it's some sort of tutorial. The game gets better and better after that, and can be fairly challenging, especially with high difficulty settings. + Good soundtrack, good art direction and nice story (only downside is the script of the mini-sequences at the beginning of each fight, that feel childish and useless). Cons : - Worst.voice.acting.ever... At first I thought it was just a poor translation. Then I tried it in English, and that's actually worse. The main protagonist and the pandas sound like someone reading a boring text at school. The rats remind me of bad quality cartoons (and the script certainly does not help them). The game might have been better with no voices at all. - Unskippable dialogues. This is especially annoying when you reload your save because you missed something. - Camera : the top view is fine for fights (although zooming out could improve it when there are many enemies). But it can be annoying during platforming sections, because sometimes you can't see far enough. All in all, Legend of Kay is a great action/platformer, that could use a few improvements, but definitely worth playing for people who like the genre.
