Knights and Bikes

Lovely in many ways, suboptimal in others. I enjoyed the 2-player co-op with a sibling, and the game is certainly designed for it: sometimes scenes even ask you to compete with one another, or to converse between your characters. But after the first third of the game, it gets seriously bogged down. The initially interesting atmospheric storytelling mostly makes way for long scenes with opaque puzzles and unexceptional battles, sometimes involving a frustrating search for the exit to the current area. I would've enjoyed the game much more if 3+ hours of mid-game content had been cut. I wonder if the devs overextended themselves, resulting in underdeveloped story arcs, or if the game was intentionally padded to increase its "expected play time" metric. In either case, I wasn't happy with the result. Ultimately, Knights and Bikes is unfortunately less than the sum of its parts. I enjoyed the first few hours, but given the game's overall grindy nature and its sudden, unsatisfying ending, it was ultimately a miss for me and my sibling. A pity.

Kickstarter backers (including myself) have enjoyed the privilege of playing this a few days early, and let me tell ya: This game is fun, it's charming as heck, the art and sound design are superb.. And I can't think of any game that more perfectly encapsulates what it was like to be a child; On one hand you have the positive aspects of adventure and imagination and friendship, but then it also delves into the fears and frustrations and uncertainty that come with being a kid. Definitely playable in single-player (The AI for the uncontrolled player is surprisingly good!) but if you can find a friend to experience it with you, that's for sure the way to go! P.S. It's easy to see why Double Fine picked up this indie title for publishing; It fits in so seamlessly with the rest of their catalogue, someone could easily mistake it for something they developed in-house. In other words, if you love Double Fine games, you WILL love Knights and Bikes!

This game is just a child's story with little playability. Perhaps, when played with children, little ones could enjoy the game. Although I was really expecting playing this game, I just feel disappointed, for this is not a real "game" but a tale. I give it 2 stars because graphics and presentation are cute and nice. However, after finishing the game, I just feel as I have lost my time (mine and my boyfriend's who's endured it till the end, too...)

Thematically and mechanically, the game succeeds in highlighting cooperation. Foam Sword successfully delivers a great title that manages to be both fun and artistically inventive. Knights and Bikes is highly recommended for those looking for a captivating cooperative campaign to play with a friend.
