Bittersweet horror game

Didn't know what to expect going in. I really enjoyed the mix of retro and modern style, between the pixel art graphics layered with HD VFX, to the high-quality sound design. It's a short game, very story-driven, but with puzzles and even combat segments. Everything seems to serve the narrative. It's not very challenging, so you won't have to worry much about repeated failures inhibiting the story's pacing. The short campaign makes it easy to digest in a long afternoon or over a weekend. It's a simple story told in a complex way. While I could see some people having issues connecting with it, I found it to be well-executed and effective. It's one of those stories that are filled with metaphors and vague allusions to what's going on, that has the player asking lots of questions, only having inklings as to the true nature of the story. By the end, specifically because of the final cutscene sequence, I feel like every major question I had was answered. I had a good time. Five stars. Looking forward to what these devs do next.

Metaphor: The game

I was very excited about this game because the presentation looked very good and I'm intrigued by emotional narrative-driven games. I saw the demo and I was sold on buying this as soon as it came out on PC. Given the limited characters for GOG reviews, I will place my full review on gamefaqs.com and Steam. My first red flag should have been recognizing this is a port of a mobile game that already came out a year ago. After rewatching the trailers and rereading the descriptions here, I feel mislead. The trailers and demo showcase all the best parts; it doesn't get better. The atmosphere and art are both good. Simple and effective. The effects such as lighting and rain are very well done and I wish there were more instances of them. The music is very repetitive. Sometimes it does not smoothly transition between pieces. The technical issues are very bad. From the game's credits, this game had 52 people involved with its testing. 23 of those were direct QA testors. This is a 3-4 hour mobile game. The length of time it took to release on PC and the amount of bugs I encountered are shockingly unacceptable. Immediately, the game had consistent trouble scrolling right smoothly. I can run things like Skyrim and Hyper Light Drifter pefectly fine so I know it's not my desktop. I was able to clip through a roof. Animations would stutter or disappear entirely. There are pointless paper collectibles that vanished from my inventory when I picked another up. Gameplay is almost nonexistent. Puzzles are obvious. If you die, you'll respawn nearly exactly how you left it when you died. This means that, in combat, the enemies don't respawn and they retain how much damage you did to them. Tonally, the game is not consistent. The game is not so much horror as it is eerie. There is no gamplay climax and many things are pointless. There are 2 exposition-metaphor-dump NPCs. I have significant problems with the story and its extreme over-reliance on Metaphor. I'm out of characters.

if only the game was as good as it looks

i don't regret buying and playing inmost, i already knew, the hype wasn't justified, when i bought it, but i'm still a bit disappointed. unfortunately inmost is one of the many smaller games, where the quality of the different aspects vary and hardly seem to fit. the game looks good and has a pleasant atmosphere in the beginning, but the later part of the game almost makes you forget about that. by the end, i was just mostly uninterested, bored and the game felt kind of meaningless. i would have preferred the game to look worse and have a worse atmosphere, so parts of the game wouldn't feel wasted.

Kept me entertained for a bit.

This game is pretty "meh" in my opinion. I think it has interesting art, the gameplay is not interesting and feels pretty boring. This is the kind of game you'd go into for the story and atmosphere, not how it plays. It feels lackluster, While it looks good, I feel like it's pretty flat or bland. Like another review states, it heavily uses metaphors. There are parts of the story that makes me feel pity, but at the same time it's hard to maintain interest in what it has to show. So for $15, I'd recommend trying a different game. The story is interesting but I think a different game like Hob, Hyperlight Drifter, or especially CrossCode would be a better use of money within the $20 range. But at the very least it kept me entertained for an evening if nothing else.

A tale to remember

To me, it is mainly a puzzle platformer played for the story. The first thing I noticed about the game was the incredible graphic style made by joining good pixel art with high quality special effects. Love the wind and rain. It immediately attracted me. Second was the atmosphere that is a well made dark and sad atmosphere created by uniting the graphics, music and chilling sound effects. The sound effects were really good (and loud). The puzzles and exploration might remind older gamers of the PS1 era resident evils and silent hills. I recommend finding the Pain Crystals and listening to the Storytellers tales. Great story, lovely narration, plenty of things to find, and an ending that is both sad and happy make this a great artistic game that people should play. “Do you remember it? That tale about flowers?”
