Fast paced and funny (full of gangster movies references) it is a blast to play this game.
It looks as good as it plays.
The only nick pick I have is that I wasn't able to link mouse wheel to changing weapons but hardly a game breaker. Well worth the price!
Gonna buy the second one for sure.
This game could be fun and great if it wasn't for the severly limited moveset and aiming.
The sequel does everything right, so I would like to have a remake of this game with the controls of the second game.
Guns, Gore and Cannoli is a neat game with interesting characters (mainly the lead character) which really makes the story feel great and I wanted to see more.
However with a game of only 12 levels it feels very short, and even if the length of the game can drag on a lot due to being a hard game where you can't just run and gun there is not much to it after you've beaten it, which took me about 3 and a half hours with plenty of dying, except for trying out the achivements, trying PvP sort of game which just feels speeded up and with AI there isn't much reacting in it.
In short the gameplay is like an old arcade game where you jump, shoot and kill in all sorts of ways, the game definitly has alot of weapons to choose from but I personally felt there was too many who were the same, and at least in the story I would have prefered to see them replace each others instead, after all, the only difference in the two pistols are that one does higher damage and penetrates several enemies. The shotguns are damage difference and amount of ammo, the sprayweapons I didn't see much of a difference, but they're both weak and just meant to spray and pray. The flamer and the "electrogun" mostly differed in where they could hit enemies, and same there, if the game had dropped the Thomson, the standard pistol and the basic shotgun for the upgrades I would have died a lot less from trying to find the right weapons while being charged by a horde of zombies.
So all in all, the game is an old arcade sort of game with plenty of weapons and some choice in how to get past enemies, it is a linnear story and you have no choices to make, but the story really makes up for any flaws, as long as you don't pay too much for the game. I would probably not have bought it for full price.
I'm a big fan of the Metal Slug run & gun arcade series. I was searching the web looking for a similar but more modern game when I found Guns, Gore & Cannoli and Guns, Gore & Cannoli 2. Both were on sale for very low prices on GOG so I grabbed them both. Like many games in a series, the first one really is the best and for me it holds true here. I absolutely love the game and have been playing it non-stop since I bought it. It's a comical shooter with a goofy storyline but it's very fun to play. I read one review noting it was too short. Easy fix. Increase the difficulty level and play through it again. I am pleased to have found this series on sale but it's certainly worth full price. I'm glad I bought them and if you are a fan of run & gun games this is one you shouldn't miss.
"Guns, Gore & Cannoli" is, at its core, a time waster. It doesn't have a deep story, nor are the mechanics that difficult to grasp. There is not sense of personal fulfillment at the end of the game, nor a sense of wow at the scope of the world. This is not, however, a bad thing. Sometimes you just want to pick up a game and shoot zombies, and that's exactly what "Guns, Gore & Cannoli" offers. You play as Vinnie, a mobster who is tasked with retrieving someone from a town that has been incommunicando for the past few days. Upon arriving, you find that it is filled with zombies, gangsters, and soldiers, and it is your job to fight your way past them and finish your mission -- and maybe discover what the heck is happening. Over the course of the game (about 3 or 4 hours), you'll use a range of weapons to defeat an assortment of enemies, including three bosses. Each type of enemy has its own skills. Some might explode, others might run through crowds, and still others might spray poison gas. The art style is easy on the eyes, and the gameplay (keyboard only) is smooth. Overall, a fun time waster, and well worth a buy.
