BlüEBERRY EDiTiON adds new content to GoNNER

Out of the blüe, we’ve updated our first IGF award-winning game! GoNNER BlüEBERRY EdiTION adds new weapons, heads, enemy types, a new challenge, some sweet, sweet, new visuals. And yes, there are also blüeberries.

  • New head! Attack enemies from below!
  • New weapon! Spikes and skull explosions. Aw yeah!
  • New world! Fishes and blueberries!
  • A bunch of fine-tunings and stuff!
  • Some neat new visuals!

Hop back into GoNNER if it’s been a while! And if you lose your head, it’s cool—we have plenty more where that came from.

GoNNER is a tough as hell procedurally-generated 2D platformer with roguelike elements, following the largely misunderstood and altruistic Ikk on a journey to cheer up his only friend in this world—a giant landbound whale named Sally—by searching for just the right trinket in the deep and dark places nearby.

With Death as his mentor, supplying both a multitude of abilities and arsenal for Ikk to use, Ikk traverses an ever-changing land full of unwieldy creatures who don't appreciate his trespassing or his friend Sally. Several different environments, arduous bosses, hidden secrets, multiple endings, and more await Ikk on his journey to make one person happy even if it kills him—which it certainly will.

Brutal and Beautiful

GoNNER is a beautiful game with an awesome sense of style. Don't let it's simple design fool you though, it is pretty brutal and you'll die a lot... Like a lot a lot. That's okay though, it does a great job of dangling that carrot on a stick to keep you coming back for more. I've really enjoyed the experimentation of trying different combinations of weapons, heads, and accessories. Each of them can individually completely change the way you play the game and as you experiment with different load outs it can be a very different experience each time. Not to mention, the core mechanics of the game are spot on, making the process of trying out new things far less daunting and intuitive. I cannot say enough about how much I love the sound design in this game. The ambient and eerie tones fit the aesthetic of the game so well. As you build up your combo, you'll also notice the tempo of the music picks up, adding to that delicate balance of dread and delight. There's still a lot to discover and plenty of unknowns in the game. That is personally something I love in games. Binding of Isaac did a great job of throwing you into a world where you could understand the fundamentals of the gameplay, but as you collect and unlock more items you had to learn what works and what doesn't. GoNNER follows suit in a similar way, making discovery and experimentation an absolute joy. If you are a fan of platforming games of any type, get GoNNER... Seriously. Here's some gameplay of my first experience with the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YmLeqa1Ekg

No Keyboard Remapping Possible

I am sorry, but this simple feature is a dealbreaker for me. I do not use any of the keyboard layouts that are in the options menu (nor shout it matter: use scancodes). So every time I start this game, I have to change the keyboard layout in my system. That is already annoying enough, but then even when I change the keyboard layout to a compatible layout, they keys are not arranged how I would like them to be arranged. For example when you want to play on a laptop, arrow keys are just not the keys that you want to play with, on Desktop that is fine though. And last but not least, I have a lot of experience in other similar games, and here I just use a reverse mapping of jumping and shooting. I am sorry, the game might be good, I don't know. But this is a dealbreaker for me. And it would be an easy to fix issue.

Into the Platforming Crucible

Gonner is a flashy 2D platformer/shooter with roguelike elements. There is plenty to see and unlock, but its best to remain purposefully vague on this point. The game is designed to bloom slowly, revealing itself to the player in layers. I don't intend to spoil that for anyone. The game isn't shy about being hostile to new players. The first time you book up the game, you won't know what's going on and the game offers you no guidance. It's up to you to figure out what all the flashy icons on the HUD mean, what you need to do, what this or that item does. You're going to die. A lot. But the more you exert yourself, the more the game rewards you. There are secrets, various unlockables and cool design flourishes dished out in spades to those who are willing to work with the game on its own terms. If you run out of patience quickly or you don't enjoy the basic tenants of the roguelike genre, I'd advise you to pass on this one. A lot of indie games have been designing around this 'hard roguelike' trope that's been so popular recently. Gonner stands out among them simply for its overall level of polish. The graphics are dripping with personality, the controls are tight, the sound design is impeccable (seriously, bravo to the sound designer). In the 2010's my favorite games have been hard little indie gems like 1001 Spikes, Super Meat Boy and Nuclear Throne. I don't know if Gonner has the staying power or depth of these games (I'd be lying if I said I had an understanding of the full scope of Gonner after 10 or so hours), but, if you're looking to scratch an itch for a difficult, twitchy platformer/shooter, your 10 bucks would be well invested here.

Great to look at, but not fun enough.

The game initially pulled me in with the interesting and unique visuals, and the gameplay was fine at first, but after a few deaths I was dreading repeating the beginning stages, which I found far too easy. On the other hand, bosses (aka the first boss, since it's the only one I made it to) often took me from full health to dead in a matter of seconds. The short invincibility frames and equipment-drop mechanic only furthered the dichotomy between the initial walk-in-the-park stages and the kill-you-faster-than-you-can-blink boss fight. If the game took a chunk of the difficulty from the boss and transferred it to the actual stages the game might be more enjoyable, but I just don't enjoy spending 5-10 minutes prancing through the handful of per-boss stages, only to be trashed by the boss in seconds, doomed to repeat my boring return trek.

Prepare to Die Edition

Gonner is a game like no other, you just needs to see a image of it to find that out. It's a tough roguelike, a mix of platformer with shooter and permadeath. (It reminds me Super Meat Boy but with guns). A procedurally-generated 2D world whre you find strange creatures and a fantastic level design. Weird music absolutely outstanding and a visual art awesome, never seen before. The characters are adorable and creepy and the same time. The control is very smooth and intuitive. And there are differents items and guns to make differents combinations. The game is hard, a lot, but has tons of fun, they could called it "prepare to die edition". Without no doubt, this is a great game, very fun and challenging. I recommend it to anyone who likes platformer and hard games.
