Description

Whether you are drawn to the lands of Gloomhaven by the call of adventure or an avid desire for the glimmer of gold in the dark, your fate will surely be the same…

Lead your band of mercenaries through this unforgiving place, where every choice is crucial. Carve your way through terrifying dungeons, dreadful forests and dark caves filled with horrific monsters to reap your rewards… or die trying.

Sell your sword to anyone who can afford it, may they be city officials or corrupt cultists. You are paid to get results and not ask questions. Where will you draw the line?

Gloomhaven is a tactical RPG and a digital adaptation of the ultimate strategy board game by Isaac Childres (the highest-rated board game of all time on BoardGameGeek). Set in a unique medieval dark fantasy universe, Gloomhaven rewards strategic planning and problem solving. Face this dark world alone or in online co-op for up to 4 players!

Explore the world in a band of 2 to 4 mercenaries. Each of the 17 unique characters comes with their own skills and more than 1,000 different abilities to master! Prepare your deck of ability cards before setting out to explore the dark caves and dreadful forest of Gloomhaven through quests and events.

Once inside a dungeon, engage in tactical turn-based combat by selecting two cards for each mercenary on every turn. You can only use the top half of one and the bottom half of another, so plan accordingly!

Move up your hired blades on the hex grid terrain to take advantage of the dungeon’s environment. Set up deadly combos and unleash devastating powers but be wary of the cost. Cards are a resource as scarce and crucial as your life points, so watch out for exhaustion. Every choice has life or death consequences.

Hone your abilities during the game with enhancements and perks, while your power increases with level ups and new equipment. You need every advantage you can to survive here. So, gear up your band of mercenaries, chase powerful artifacts, buy the favor of the Great Oak, and never let your guard down.

Adapted from the original Gloomhaven Board Game, this branching campaign of 95 story missions pits your greed against your morality. Many powerful opponents are vying for control over the city of Gloomhaven while others are looking for ancient crypts and forgotten artefacts. You could always side with the inhabitants, but it may not pay well…
Whatever your path may be, it will be paved with difficult choices.

Created in collaboration with the community during the early access, the Guildmaster adventure has more than 160 exclusive digital missions that allow you to experience another facet of Gloomhaven with new storylines, quests, map and NPCs.
Lead your guild of mercenaries in a region overrun by unspeakable things, far worse than simple bandits.

Choose the best combination of mercenaries for each fight and follow their character stories in this deadly new territory.

You know that game many seem to like...

... but you can't figure out why? So then you keep trying because the game is "the best out there" and you still can't find what the heck does this game does better than the others to be "the best out there"? Well, that is Gloomhaven for me. I own this game on Steam - and nowadays I keep trying to convince myself I was drunk when I bought it. The digital version plays pretty much like the boardgame, so it IS a good way to experience the game without investing a ton of money on the tabletop version; however, it is just a mediocre dungeon crawler at its core. The art is likeable, but not amazing; gameplay is okayish (in both versions, with pros and cons when comparing both); the campaign is nothing new... nothing in it is really, really bad, but absolutely nothing is mind boggling. Regarding the digital version, soundtrack and narrations are good, but again, nothing that spectacular. Why is this the best board game ever according to BGG? My best shot is that it appeals to people that would like to play tabletop RPG Dungeon Crawlers but don't have the time or impetus to actually do it. Is it better than those mentioned Old School Dungeon Crawlers? Absolutely not. Now, when it comes to the digital version, besides testing to know the game, I can't really understand why you would invest hundreds of hours into this game instead of playing any one of the better Dungeon Crawlers RPGs on PC out there (not to mention you won't have much of a deep story here by comparison to even the Dungeon Crawlers for PC of the 90s. I know you will find a ton of positive reviews in this section, that's the nature of this beast, but here I am leaving you with a counterpoint and a message of support so you don't have to feel bad to pass on this title. So there you have it, I confess, I don't like the "best ranked board game on Board Game Geek".

Almost flawless board game adaption

(75 hours played on Steam during Early Access) If you haven't played the board game yet, do yourself a favour and give it a try. It's not been #1 on boardgamegeek for ages for nothing. The computer game is an almost perfect adaption of the board game and that can't have been an easy task. The biggest advantage over the real thing is all the time you save setting up/packing away the real game. It makes it possible to have a quick game with friends for an hour or two, without having to plan for an extra hour of setup time. Really my only criticism is that you can't skip more of the animations or have them run parallel. They're well done, but I don't need to see 10 sekeleton warriors shielding themselves for ~3 seconds one after the other. Really only a very minor nitpick compared to all the stuff that the games does so well!

Gloomhaven don't run without GOG Galaxy!

If you start Gloomhaven without GOG Galaxy running, it will stuck with the initial Loading Screen with running/changing Gametipps and a heavy load on the Graficscard (~ 90% on my 3080Ti for 1440p. I tried it (also started as admin) for more than 1 hour. There should be a hint from GOG on the Shopsite for Glommhaven for this behaviour !

So much potential...

Update: After playing for several hours with our group, I had to contact GOG to reduce my initial rating. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this game. As much as I wanted to enjoy Gloomhaven on PC, I am sorry to say that it is a bug-riddled mess with horrible usability. I am a big fan of the board game - despite the heavy price and the insane difficulty. Sadly, I cannot recommend this game in its current condition. For a game that is no longer in early access, it has too many game-breaking bugs. Considering the enormous difficulty, it is all the more frustrating when you get stuck due to bugs. On top come so many missed opportunities that should be a no-brainer when digitizing a physical game. While you can create multiple heroes of the same class, the game does not allow you to bring them on a quest together. If you play online, other players cannot play with their own heroes but you have to assign them characters that you created. If you have not played the board game, you probably have no idea what is going on half of the time. My group has played through 3/4 of the main board game plus half of 'Jaws of the Lion' and we still have to consult the log. Many things happen too fast or are not adequately visualized (e.g. curses). Some non-consequential events have to be confirmed several times, either by the active player or by the whole party. But during a fight, you oftentimes miss using an active element because the 'highlight' is so far out of your field of vision. The many bugs we regularly encounter will hopefully get fixed in the near future. But this game lacks usability that could have been improved massively if the developer had run proper user tests or if they had employed a decent UX designer. This game should not have seen the light of day for another couple of weeks or even months of development. It surely has much potential, but so far, a lot of that has been squandered.

Surprisingly good

192 hours played on Steam during Early Access) A very challenging tactical game. Well done animations, nice graphics and atmospheric soundtrack. I played mainly in multiplayer, going through the whole game twice in different team configurations. And after yesterday's release, I'm ready for the campaign mode. In a time of buggy games, this early access was like a complete game. Very good contact with developers on diskord - you can report your comments and bugs and they respond very quickly - making updates fast. This is an unusual approach instead of focusing on the store with paid skins like everyone else in game industry. Highly recommend.
