Rewarding single player hack 'n slash fantasy action
Hands down my favorite single player hack 'n slash on the PC. I requested it on GOG and was floored that they were able to get it. Thank you! This is a single player game whose faults are few but noteworthy : lack of local/online multi-player, console resolution textures, and the repetitive nature that is associated with the hack 'n slash genre. That being said, it has an excellent story (at the cost of linear stages) with high presentation values (models, locales). Some of you might have played the Lord of the Rings game on the PS2/Xbox; Demon Stone was developed by the same team. There are three main characters in Demon Stone with distinctly different play styles: a human warrior (melee attacks), sorcerer (ranged attacks) and a half drow/wood elf rogue (stealth attacks). One of this game's hallmarks is the ability to switch among the characters anytime in battle. This helps break up the repetitive nature of the genre and introduces an element of strategy into an otherwise straight forward kill-everything-and-move-on-to-the-next-stage game. While the majority is action oriented there are RPG elements as well. You're rewarded stat bonuses and money at the end of each stage which you can put towards new skills/combos (which help break up the monotony) as well as equipment (which changes the characters appearance in-game). The in-game textures are for the most part identical to the console versions but you get the benefit of higher resolutions with this release. I've finished the game with keyboard & mouse but I highly recommend using a game controller (PS3 stock controller is perfect); the controls map beautifully to the four face buttons (thanks to the console heritage). Demon Stone also runs beautifully on Linux via Wine. Beautiful locales, challenging boss fights, a well written fantasy story, superb voice acting (Patrick Stewart, Vanessa Marshall), responsive controls (controller), and a guest appearance by Drizzt make this a great game for a rainy weekend afternoon. Highly recommended by me. :)
