Description
Through the eyes of Allied, German and Russian squad leaders, experience the most immersive World War II time strategy game where each battle is played out and won differently based on your tactical choices.

Faces of War is devoted to the final period of World War II in Europe: from the summer of 1944 to the spring of 1945. During this period mighty battles were held in France, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Hungary and Germany. The German war machine was making every possible effort to defend the territory of Third Reich from the Soviet and Allied troops. However, in 11 months the German resistance was crushed all along the front lines and the war ended where it had begun – in Berlin.
  • Get immersed in the heat of the world war II, command American, English, Soviet and German troops during world-renowned battles that include D-Day, new winter missions and the storming of Berlin
  • Complex team AI for new tactical opportunities: AI controlled soldiers don't simply execute any order given by a player, they think how to do it in the most efficient and safe way.
  • Realistic physics: anything can be destroyed or manipulated and used to player's advantage
  • Improvised player tactics, advanced AI reactions and real time physics guarantee players that missions will never be fought the same way.

A review...of the game!

While clunky at times, this is a quality title that allows one to be immersed in massive battles that effectively get across the sprawling nature of late WWII conflicts. You can blow up pretty much everything, and the engine copes pretty well in allowing you to blaze your own path of destruction through almost everything on screen. A very playable game, and one that rewards repeated run-throughs to try out different tactics. ps. The big hullaballoo over the game art is a bit of a storm in a teacup. There were multiple versions of the cover art, dependent on where the game was sold. So to claim that the 'original game art' is being replaced is nonsense. Particularly ironic that we have so many russians complaining, as the developers were from the Ukraine in the first place...I doubt they'd want a US flag, but I bet they're happy there isn't a Soviet one there, either...

(Too?) Deep, complex, tactical gameplay.

All in all, a very enjoyable game, with quite sufficient levels of realism and very high amounts of micromanagement and complexity - you control nearly every aspect of your units' behaviour, which opens up a variety of different tactics (more or less realistically simulated at that). However, that very same complexity is sometimes a drawback as you can easily get overwhelmed in battles above a certain size - however, thankfully the units do have a somewhat decent AI and usually can ensure at least their own survival. The UI, however, is not so good - due to the aforementioned micromanagement and the sheer variety of actions that are controlled by the player, it is a bit overloaded and not very handy to use. Good historical accuracy, fresh perspective (for Western gamers) on WWII, giving a local view of the Eastern Front (in contrast to the highly stereotype- and propaganda-laden Relic version in CoH 2), without descending into Soviet apologetics. All in all - very enjoyable for strategy fans, but fairly complex and with a steep learning curve for the casual gamer. Oh, and worth buying alone because of the cover issue fuss and the infantile butthurt evidenced in the reviews below.

Good ideas BUT......

The Idea of this game is pretty good. Graphics look nice and physics are awesome. But here are the negative points: Poor/weird camera, to many buttons and controls (hell this is just overloaded! Less and more intuitive would be better), to much of trial and error (for example because of the weird camera), game mechanics are broken sometimes (you know it when you play it), sometimes you have absolutly no idea what youre supposed to do now :D Ok for this low price it is ok and if you have enough patience to replay every mission 3-4 times, because you f*** up with the camera or just the controls and your squad is wiped out, then youre ok with this on. I like that game BUT it could be better. BTW i read some stuff about the coverartwork Guys.... grow up an get a life. For real.... Who cares about that flag or soldiers? I am from germany. Guess who is the enemy in almost every WW2 game? Do we complain about that like sill little kids?

Not Best, but not bad...

Pretty good game from the series. I played all parts of the Men of War. Most of them took place back in 2010 (MOW, MOW Red Tide, FOW, SHOWW2, and other parts missing from the GOG). And honestly, I like more MOW and MOW RT, but this is not the worst game in the series (the worst is Condemned Heroes, because there are bugs everywhere). In this game, we, according to the classics, play for Germany, the Allies, and the USSR, with 8 missions for each of the parties. Although this game is not my favorite from the series, I give this game 5 stars, because it deserves it.

True Simulation of the Mechanics of War

At first it feels janky, but there's a method to the micromanagement in this game as opposed to even prestige war tactics simulators like Company of Heroes. Here you have to repair your vehicles, load them with ammo, keep them fueled. Heck, you can't even command a vehicle without soldiers for each role, otherwise the one poor guy you assigned with attempt to do everything by himself...slowly. You need to keep track of your team's various roles. Sometimes you need to take direct command to draw a bead on a priority target. You need to equip a squad with various weapons for various tasks. This is the kind of game that values patience as much as speed. The controls ARE a little clunky and sometimes your men will make the wrong choices, bum rushing a tank because you forgot to put them in cover. Sometimes grenades will bounce at the wrong time or you'll run dry on ammo and rush to reload just as the enemy recovers and attacks. But all this feels realistic to the chaos of conflict. Very few times I felt outright frustrated with the controls. Some options are VERY specific (like unhooking a gun from a truck) but thankfully you can find them in a side panel or use a hot key more often than not. Regarding the game's production, the graphics are appropriately gritty and accurate. The tanks especially have tons of effort poured into making them look and move like the real deal. And trucks explode BIG which is always satisfying. Voice acting is...okay. Clearly this wasn't originally in English so translation can be wonky and performances shaky, but it wasn't a game breaker. The music is strangely subdued but you can replace it with something more appropriate. If you don't mind more a simulator than a crazy action-on-demand RTS, this is the best there is. No other game requires you to really get into the mindset of each soldier and care for every vehicle like this.
