Description


Evan's Remains is a mystery-thriller puzzle adventure about finding a missing boy: Evan. The game combines logic-based platform puzzles with narrative inspired by Japanese graphic adventure games.

Gameplay:

Every time the player solves from two to three puzzles, the story goes forward and new mechanics are introduced. The challenge of the puzzles lies in the player’s ability to figure out what do rather than solve challenges based on skill. As the difficulty curve increases, the puzzles become more complex by combining two or more previously introduced mechanics.

Story:

Evan, the genius boy, has been missing for years. One day, a letter signed by him is received, claiming he’s on an uninhabited island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Nobody knows why, but he asked specifically for a girl named “Dysis” to go and look for him. The player will take control of this girl, who we don’t know much about. As we follow Dysis’s adventure, questions will start to be answered little by little. All of the little puzzle pieces which seemed unrelated in the beginning will now begin to slowly fit together as the truth is slowly revealed.

A visual novel with a phone game tacked on

This game has some beautiful pixel art and pushed this from 1 star to 2. The gameplay has the depth of a phone game with 25 levels interspersed with 100 pages of novella. This script really suffers from "why say in a sentence what could be said in 3 paragraphs". The ending just throws the whole idea of gameplay out the window and it's just 30 straight minutes of text.

A lot of story in a little game.

I didn't really enjoy this game, unfortunately the story parts really drag on too long for my taste, but that is just my own subjective opinion. The actual game parts are good though, the only "problem" there is some of the background sprites can seem messed up at times, its really minor but hard to unsee once you notice it. Also, jumping does not work properly if you hit the up or down button while in the air, its not a real problem that will prevent you from playing and enjoying the game, it's just an odd thing, probably a oversight just like the few out of place sprites. The good news is that both story and game parts can be skipped as you like, so you're not stuck with either one if you can't stand either the story or the puzzles.
