Beautiful, whimsical, magical.

A great little RPG which has as a main appeal the fact that it doesn't take itself seriously, allowing an amusing, off-beat story and a a simple, yet fun gameplay to construct a mesmerizing atmosphere. It wears its cliches on its sleeve, constantly winking at the player and in doing so manages to avoid the great cliches of recent RPGs - the obsession for a mature/gritty/dark setting and story. While the combat and character development are rather on the simple side, that is not necessarily a bad thing, fitting perfectly with the odd-ball, whimsical aura of the game. Ever since the first screenshots emerged, the main discussion surrounding the game pertained to the rare-in-our-age top-down perspective. While I was, admittedly, slightly put off by this from the screenshots, it works far better in the game than originally assumed and the slightly odd feeling is dispelled after 20 minutes of playing it. All in all, this is not a hard-core game in regards to combat or character progression. It doesn't have the most original story in the world. But damn it, I'm willing to put all that aside when I think of all the fun I am having whenever I play it. 5 stars due to it perfectly achieving its goal of entertaining me.

Better than Diablo 3

Hi, I preordered Driftmoon on the official site and played this game since the alpha. This was about the time when the Diablo 3 was released. In comparison Driftmoon was more addicting than Diablo 3 which is a AAA production. Yes, you can't compare the graphics but the most imortant thing in my opinion is the gameplay and the story. That are the points in which Driftmoon does it better than Diablo 3. What I mean by that is, that the gameplay of Driftmoon doesn't only consist of stupid enemysmashing. There are clever puzzles and calmer parts, where you only explore the world. It's also possible to come back to a specific place if you forgot something there. The game doesn't take itself too serious. The story is very amusing and poetic. If you finished the main story you have the possibilty to build your own adventure with the editor included with this game. You can also build MODs, without being affraid being banned from a server. You have also the possibilty to share your creation with the community. Some MODs and additional adventures already exist. If you are still not shure if you should buy this, you can go to the official site of Instant Kingdom and try the demo. The difference between buing it here and buing it on the official site is that here the game is 100% DRM-free. On the official and any other site you get a shareware download, which has to be unlocked with a serial key (online connection required). I can only recommend this gem of game.

A feel-good RPG

Yes, that is what this game is. Magical, whimsical and full of tongue-in-cheek humour. Charming, wonderfully written characters and a world full of surprises. Combat is simple, as is all the game-mechanics, which i like, but may not be everyones cup of tea. The graphics are old-fashioned, but in my opinion very fitting the tone of the game. A solid four stars and well worth the price!

Worthy game

So, long story short: Driftmoon presents itself as a classic isometric RPG where you'll be fighting foes, solving quests, meeting new companions and upgrading your character on the way. In my view this game is a nicely crafted graphical adventure with RPG elements: combat plays a somewhat secondary role and instead it is very story-driven. You have to read a fair amount of dialogue and pay actual attention to it in order to succeed. Everything is written with care in a clever, full of wits and twists, never boring style. Graphics and sounds are a bit crude sometimes but do their job neatly; the game world is colourful, well designed, and generally pleasing to the eye. I really liked Driftmoom: it's a breath of fresh air, a little gem carved with care in a world of anonymous games. It has some flaws though: first of all, it's short (lasts about 10h), second, the gameplay is a bit too linear: you have to actively use your brains to solve quests and puzzles but it tends a bit to "drive" the player... That's why I talked about “graphical adventure” earlier (though I know it's improper): I think that the main goal of the game is to enjoy the story in a very light hearted way but everything is overall very enjoyable. This said, if you prefer quality over quantity and are looking for a slow paced adventure, with a cool stor I recommend Driftmoon. If you're not... give it a try: you might discover something you like.

Boring

The following is spoiler-free. TL;DR: This is a top-down rpg with a nice style, mostly stupid dialogues, a simplistic plot, boring combat and almost no character development (skillpoint-wise). Context: I preordered this game years ago and I am a fan of the work of the developer. The "handmade" style of the game is quite nice. Nothing fancy but a refreshing change. The dialogues are just plain boring most of the time. There are some funny passages but most of it is pointless or just stupid. Almost all of the characters you encounter are designed to be funny, but they rarely are, which is desastrous for that is all they are meant to be. The plot is extremely simple and most of its coherence is sacrificed for some laughs. While those laughs do work as intended that still leaves you without any meaningfull background to the gameplay. Furthermore the game is very short. I collected almost everything there was to collect and it lasted about 8 hours In combat you choose wich skills are to be used in which order and then you win (most of the times, some "bossfights" require some kiting). This does work as intended but the skill system is very limited. You only have a handfull of active skill, about 4 are usefull at the same character-level, and the handmade animations are very simple (in contrast to the overall graphics). So combat is boring most of the time.
