As the title says, years later, they added a custom launcher that gates from launching the game and requires an external account to launch with no obvious way to skip this step.
The launcher is pointless, especially when the game is on a DRM free platform.
Thankfully GoG Galaxy 2.0 allows you to roll back a patch, so for now, I will remain on the last actually DRM Free patch.
This was done for all three of their largest games, DoS I, DoS II and BG3.
I am extremely dissatisfied with this change as it offers nothing to and breaks a promise made to the customer, as much as I love their games and appreciate them as a studio, I cannot support Larian on this.
From the outset let me say that at "alpha" this puts many many AAA titles to shame.
The game runs beautifully and is clearly well optmized, the joy of having it developed for PC and not console.
The gameplay is engrossing, the tactical options nearly limitless, I love the elemental interaction, this is a game that allows dozens of different approaches to nearly all tactical problems, you are not pegged to make a "cookie cutter" party, rather develop your own options and synergise variouse skills and abilities.
Given that it is still in developement, additional options and content will be forthcomming, but in its current state the game is truly enjoyable and will only get better with time. Well done Larian Studio's, you have set the benchmark to other companies on how to do a developmental release.
The entire purpose of buying a game from GOG is that it is supposedly DRM free, but this game is NOT. The first thing that happens when you attempt to launch this game, is a 3rd party launcher pops up and forces you to create an account with Larian games, probably to track you and you must have an internet connection to play! If I wanted DRM I would go to Steam or Epic Games, this needs to be in the product description.
Already this game is a lot better than most full titles. There are a few bugs as you would expect from an Alpha release product, they are genuinely few and far between.
The multiplayer works pretty seamlessly already and with a few tweaks could be great.
The world feels much darker than Original Sin, and as such has a grittier undertone. It's almost impossible to take the moral high ground in every decision. The world is shades of grey, not black and white.
Combat is punishing on Classic mode and still challenging on Explorer. This makes the tactical combat an exciting event and not just a chore to get to the next chuck of story; as can often be the way in many titles like these.
All in all a great product so far than surly can only get better!
Highly recommended.
